How do you like your pizza?

I like mine with thick crust, a nice blend of cheese and sauce covered with mushrooms and pepperoni.

In case you can't tell it is almost dinner time here and I am hungry. :P

Over here we don't have junk food, we only eat healthy balanced meals with loads of fresh veggies and fruit. Followed by a healthy exercise regime. Rumours that we are a load of idle fatties surviving on a diet of chips ( freedom fries ), beans and burgers are entirely untrue....... ish.

Pizza is far from my favourite food, but when I do have one I much prefer a thin crust, with just about everything available on top, including if I can, sun dried tomatoes.

I rarely eat pizza as I find the ones available in the UK are very far away from the type I enjoy.

I used to work in the South of France, close to the borders of Italy. The pizzas there were very thin crust, almost like a cracker with a coating of a very rich tomato sauce then whatever else you wanted on that. My favourite was thinly sliced onion, chilli, fresh savory and locally produced olives*.

*Niçoise olives are very different from the ones that are obtainable here.

The ONLY type of burger that I would consider eating would either be home made, or one made on the premises of a small local butcher that I trust. I am also VERY fussy about where sausages come from. Several years ago, I watched a T.V. programme showing what went into mass produced burgers and sausages. Believe me you would not want to eat another one of these products if you had seen the programme. Just about everything off the animal is included, even the skin and hair, cows lips and other unmentionable bits and pieces. The whole lot is ground up finely and spiced well to make it taste reasonable. The only time that I ever set foot into a Mac*******, is if I need a toilet. I think it should be a criminal offence to allow children to eat this sort of rubbish.

Thin Crust with Ham, Pineapple, sun dried tomatoes and pepperoni

Wouldn't have a Hamburger unless it's home made from Best Minced Beef with onions.

Prefer a Wholemeal crusty roll with Chicken and salad.

Thin crust, little or no sauce and anything except green (or any color) peppers.

I really dislike peppers and they equally do not like me :P

We have a wonderful pizza place here called Papa Murphys, where they make up the pizza for you and then you bake it at home in your own oven....yuuuummmmyyy!!

Funny, I've been craving one for the last three or four days. Think I'll get one this weekend ;)

What are the favs for fast food in the uK?

The fast food menace was imported from the USA and as such, it consists of much of the same junk and unhealthy "foods" as are eaten over there. In that sentence the word "food" is used with some irony. McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken are on almost every high street.

There are, of course British derivates of these concerns but the fat laden rubbish they sell is much the same.

The original fast food (even before the great god Ronald McDonald came on the scene) is fish and chips. This is holding its own against the US competition but there is much variability in quality - some fat laden crap; some a delicate, wholesome fresh food where one can easily identify that the fish did actually, at one time, swim in the seas and that the potatoes were dug up from the ground and are not some standardised stick of an anonymous deep fried white plastic.

In addition, there are the Chinese and Indian takeaways which, again, are private enterprise and subject to the same variability as the fish and chip shop - some Chinese takeaways even double up as fish and chip shops. A few of these place are excellent, some pretty ordinary and some indescribably bad.

There is, of course, the kebab shop usually of Turkish or Greek ownership. They are frequented often by drunks and alcoholics after the pubs close. Because of this, the wares of the kebab shop can often be seen strewn over the pavements both before and after being eaten.

GLOSSARY

Chips: Deep fried potato sticks said to be equivalent to "fries" but the resemblance is often remote.

Pub: Bar with British opening times. Close at 23-00 hours, earlier on Sundays.

Pavement: Sidewalk

According to statistics.... curry is our favourite in the uk!

As -pops- has said, we've always had the fish and chip shop - remember deep fried Mars Bars :blink:

But then there are the more regional 'fast foods' for example, I can remember going to the seaside as a little girl and seeing the winkle man with his stall on the prom.

Elvers are a delicacy in the south west (Yuck!!!) and you used to be able to by them from a man in a van... cooked and ready to eat. I don't know if you still can though.

Then there is the icecream van, I don't know if you would call that fast food exactly.... but the kids love it! :)

I agree with Pops on this one. I would not even touch a MacDonalds product, as I said I only go in there for the toilet when I'm passing. In fact I would not touch the rubbish from any of their competitors either. Locally we have two excellent Chinese and one Indian take away shop that serve up excellent food, and three superb fish and chip shops. I leave the Americanise imported crap to those who have no pallet. No disrespect to America meant. I have enjoyed several trips there, but I am sorry that many Americanised products imported to the UK, including Americanised food and language leaves me cold.

As andsome says, American food isn't bad - it can be excellent. The problem is that there are so many burger joints and other junk food outlets that the real talent of American cooking is hidden.

When working in the USA, I never went to any junk food outlet. I enjoyed some of the most excellent food though. I mainly worked in NY, NJ and Chicago. The seafood was the best I've ever eaten. Soft shell crabs are to die for. Steamers (large barbecued clams) are another delicacy I would go back for and the lobsters :) :) :) :) :) .

IF you like crabs pops, you should try those caught on the Pacific coast. A couple of the most enjoyable simple meals in my life were at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. A whole Pacific crab, lovely fresh salad, a basket of sour dough bread, and a beer. We too, had many other excellent meals out, but avoided the fast food outlets like we would avoid the plague. Just to look into a MacDonald's window when passing makes me shudder. Those plastic or are they cardboard tubs filled with upright standing all the same size and shape chips, or fries what ever you want to call them, and those awful plastic boxes out of which emerge a grease laden burger, filled with ground up rubbish, and with a square slice of plastic like processed cheese, and limp lettuce. OMG I feel sick at the thought.

Never tried them, never been there. However I have to say that much as I like North Sea crab, it just cannot compare with Pacific crab, and it will always remain in my memory.
