deuces wild Posted April 17, 2005 Report Share Posted April 17, 2005 ..........arse and get anything accomplished yesterday (Saturday)?I did. :blush:I got the mowers started for the season (my son's job to mow the lawn, and he did so today), put the summer deck furniture out, cleaned out the shed, coated (boiled linseed oil) an outside rocker and waxed/detailed my wifes car. Just finished up at 9:30 p.m. and I am tired.Tomorrow I plan to clean and power wash the deck (my wife agreed to stain it if I did this).Now I am not saying I am a hard worker all year......you can usually find me on the couch in front of the tv during the winter. During the summer I am usually outside on the hammock watching a baseball game while drinking my favorite brew (beer).I just got motivated this weekend as the weather was fine and the work had to be done. Next weekend I will probably power wash the house and clean the windows. In a couple of weeks my son and I will be leveling out our backyard (we have low spots causing flooding in those areas). I will be renting a small bobcat to transfer quite of bit of topsoil to the back yard. We will then regrade it towards the sewer drains and re-seed it.After that it is a summer of leisure....baseball, beer and boating/swimming. :DSo did you get anything done this weekend and are you ready for summer? :)What sort of work do you still have to do?How do you plan to chill for the summer? :) :P Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
doug Posted April 17, 2005 Report Share Posted April 17, 2005 I did a 4 mile jog. Just starting to get into training for this years Great North Run. Training has suffered for a number of reasons up 'till now, so it's hard going. Yesterday was the start of a big improvement. Felt more of a bounce in my stride rather than a heavy plod. Knocked 7 mins off last weeks time. Still a pathetic 11.4 mins/mile. Aiming to get down to under 9 mins/mile. Then started repairing some lawn edges and finished off deheading all the Daffs. Tankus Posted April 17, 2005 Report Share Posted April 17, 2005 Emptied the the main attic ..... and got rid of the remaining laths and plaster from my upstairs front bedroom ..... this is the fourth room Ive stripped out in 4 weeks ...My smaller attics going to be hard work , as the previous owners , when they re-roofed it ....put all of the slates into it ,theres a whole roof in there , probably with an eye to selling it ......Im a bit worried about the weight , but if its been in there 30 years , I guess its OK ..Ill wait till I pull the ceiling out in the room below.. because it will be a mission . some picciescheck out the Victorian wallpaper , Ive found under about 5 layers , Its a s*** brown ...This is in the hallway and all the landings (must be about 130 years old) must have made the house very dark !.... Ive also a second redundant water tank in the ceiling , to big to move without having to cut it up .......that should be fun ! .....There was no fireplace in this room (under the MDF) , One of my back rooms had a white marble and tile one which had been covered up ... Tankus Posted April 17, 2005 Report Share Posted April 17, 2005 Heh ....it looks sooo easy when you see it on the TV makeover programmes , but plaster dust is a bastard ....... and it weighs a ton ...... the downstairs front ceiling was 3/4 inch thick .......My first scary moment was finding structural failure in the front bay window ...(pic 1 close...and pic 3) the joist supports the whole front of the upstairs and roof ....and there is a crack in it about 4 foot long , along the length of the beam ..... I was thinking thousands .... Ive had my first quote for £550 to replace it with structural steel ...and replace the bay roof ...... which I can see daylight through .... seems reasonableBuilding insurance will not cough up for it ...though .....ah wellThe crack is not fresh , plus there are some bodge job bolts alongside it so it must have been there when the bay roof was replaced ..... so it must be fairly stable The last piccy ....pulling out a thin hardboard covering there was a complete set of solid (oak..?) doors underneath joining the back room ....... think Ill keep them ...strip and sand them down and re-stain and varnish with a lighter colour wood stain ..... I hope it works ..... because although the qualities good they are far to dark .....Not just some spare time artist .!.Im doing the whole house, inc. new kitchen and 2 bathroom's.. looks like I'm going to be living in a bomb-site for months...OMG.. a year ? ..arf ..... I'm going to turn the cellar into a bedsit too.... poss with en-suit ...depending whats left in me wallet ..... The attic is ideal for another room , nice and tall......... my neighbours having it done now ....but its costing them £30 grand inc. dormer in the back ...blimey . think Ill give it a miss.. Tankus Posted April 17, 2005 Report Share Posted April 17, 2005 4 weeks, so far , things are a bit on hold at the moment until the steel beam's sorted ....... no... the hallway wall is just a stud , the only structual wood are the floor beams , all the vertical are brick , ....the "groves" (actually its just discoloured) are where the laths were attached (Nailed) and the plaster was applied on top ... Its Victorian , they never used plasterboards ...wooden slats then a rough plaster 1/2 thick , then skimmed with a finish fine plaster on top ....... pulling out all the nails holding the whole thing together took a whole day in itself .... If you look at the fourth picture you can see the laths (horizontal) in the hole in the wall ....The dogs (Gnasher) my lodgers ...... Each one needed almost gutting and as bungalows are not huge - we extended into the loft in each one and extended outwards too.All three took almost a year each to do............plenty of short tempers during that time. I had not been done for years so it took quite some time. My wife volunteered to stain it this week. What a sweety she is.I am dog tired.
