Gandalph
It must be awful living in one of these third world countries, ruled by a dishonest leader and corrupt regime, where they just "rob" the country to indulge in their own fanciful whims.I don't think Wales is all that bad catgate! andsome
Did anyone else see that idiot minister waffling on newsnight last night? He claimed that the original bid of 300 billion was just to get the games. Paxman accused him of cheating the Olympic committee, and he waffled on about knowing that they would have to have an appraisal afterwards. This is like just about everything else that this government has had a hand in. ONE ALMIGHTY C OCK UP!
catgate
He claimed that the original bid of 300 billion was just to get the games.Even for our little cherub that sounds a bit high. However, when you are leading the world in everything (saving the planet, law and order, cheating and lying) it is perfectly understandable.I wonder how much of these add-ons is needed to pay the Olympic committee members?? Tankus
you english hetherns just have no idea what its like to live in gods own country ...!I was blessed once ...,but then I fell from grace .........and got deported to London for my sins ...to join you in pain & pennance ...but , I can repent (house price dependant post 2012 ) and return to the land of my fathers ,blessed in thy bank balance ,and happy in thine self .the lord doth work in mysterious ways .... but as long as he works to my advantage ...who cares
Tankus
Ministerial aides were told by accountants - two months before the bid's submission and 10 months before the capital knew it had been chosen to host the Games - that the estimated bill for the Olympics of £3.4 billion was significantly short of the mark.Telegraph on SundayThe consultants warned aides in September 2004 that the bill was going to be £1 billion more then expected, taking it to at least £4.4 billion. In the event, even that figure proved hopelessly overoptimistic, with the revised bill mushrooming by March this year to £9.35 billion - nearly four times the original £2.4 billion estimateThe revelations are embarrassing to Gordon Brown, the Chancellor, who is poised to take over as prime minister from Tony Blair. When London submitted its bid, he portrayed himself as gatekeeper for the Games, saying the Government would act as "ultimate guarantor" of their final cost.heh.... looks like thats the end of the lottery for chartiable causes for the next two decades ....I expect bin tax fines to hit 6 figures and the congestion charge to go out as far as the M25
-pops-
saying the Government would act as "ultimate guarantor" of their final cost.WRONGThe "government" doesn't have any money. Any money that may be in the government's coffers is ours. We have entrusted it to the government to use it for our better needs.Olympic games, wars in foreign countries and myriads of other things conducted at a whim of the "government" did not have the approval of the majority of the owners of the money - us.Those in "power" need reminding of this occasionally - more often than the frequency of a change of party or of leadership. It's amazing how many people think that the government are spending their own (the government's) money instead of the money paid in taxes. AlanHo
Perhaps the government should apply for permission to cut out some of the more expensive sports and go back to basics to save money.Such as :-The 3 legged raceEgg and spoon racePancake tossing sprintCoconut shyetc
andsome
The money should come out of ministers pay, they do damn all for it, except to waste tax payers money.
catgate
This is not a joke. I am serious in what I am about to write. If an ordinary man in the street committed himself to the amount of unknown expense to which our lovely leader has committed "himself", he would be sectioned under the mental health act, and yet the loonies running this bun fight called "government" are allowed to run free. Surely there must be some way of stopping it.The loonies north of the border have just promised everything except the crown jewels in order to gain power, and not one of them could run a p*** up in a brewery without getting it all out of control.edit:-I am not specifically talking of "new" Labour. I am talking of all the muffins who are desperate to get their snouts in.

deuces wild
It is all about return on investment (ROI) Up front cost are always hard to swallow when there is no ROI within immediate sight. But when the Olympics open in your city in 5 years you will enjoy a booming economy resulting in a flood of new tax dollars, an improved infrastructure as a result of all the new construction and a long term positive impact on greater London thanks to the positive exposure you will receive from the press while broadcasting/reporting on the games.Hang in there..............it will likely be a good thing for you. catgate
The Voice of Reason .......?The Return is the massaging of the poiticians ego and "legacy", whilst the Investment is the robbing of the people to pay for this massaging by parasites and career carpetbaggers.Obtaining money by false pretences and false accounting are both very serious criminal offences. The only defence, if any, is "disturbed balance of mind", as above. But if your buddies are in receipt of honours and big pay outs..what the hell. It's no worse that bringing peace and democracy to Iraq...is it?.......and much cheaper too. andsome
Only complete idiots would do an estimate of a cost and be as inaccurate as this. Over a few years if the cost had risen by a nominal percentage that would be acceptable, but the sort of increases that are being bandied around, serve once again to show what a load of pillocks are in charge.
