DW, if our politicians have there way Christmas will no longer exist as it might upset the ethnic minorities in this country who think the indigineous people should bend to there will, and with help from the do-gooders and crackpots are suceeding.

Plus Christmas is not celebrated for what it is.

It is just a money making machine and a few days of work.

Religious Christmas displays are not permitted on public property thanks to our liberal courts in the States.

Some schools are not permitted to include the word Christmas in their student concerts or shows thanks to our liberal courts in the States.

Many retailers are now avoiding the word "Christmas" in any of their advertising or displays thanks to our liberal courts in the States.

The liberals have managed to strip the true meaning of Christmas from that holiday.

Thus my question about why folks who do not believe in God celebrate the holiday.........but I guess the answer is obvious as it is not longer a celebration of the birth of Christ but a money making holiday for the retailers.

And before my detractors respond and point out that I recently reponded about my Christmas shopping.....yes one can purchase gifts for their loved ones while still understanding the true spiritual meaning of the day.

Thus my question about why folks who do not believe in God celebrate the holiday..

Celebrations in the middle of December were around long before the Christian religion was even a twinkle in Joseph's (or even God's) eye.

The events were originally at the winter solstice and to celebrate the turnaround in the Earth's cycle to look forward to the coming of the shortening of the period daily darkness (or in Santa's country half way through the long darkness of winter). It is the Christians that stole the festival from the so-called Pagans.

Many of the traditions of our so-called Christmas have nothing to do with the birth of Christ at all but are what remains of the pre-Christian festival. Holly, ivy, Yule logs (whether wood or chocolate cake) and many other things are indicators of the Pagan origins, indeed, the festival was named Yuletide at some time. It is interesting that a number of religions - much older than Christianity - have festivals at about that time. Their dates may be a little awry compared with the true solstice but, what's a day here or there when counting in millennia?

Of course, the whole thing now has been stolen by the great god, PROFIT so that all of the real meaning of the festivals have been lost in an orgy of avarice.

DW, you have still not answered my question. You claim that all versions of God are in fact ONE God under different names. My question was, "if God speaks to Dubya as he claims, and offers advice on American foreign policy, in as much as he told him to invade another country, how do you reconcile the fact that the one God also instructs fundamental Muslims to attack westerners"? No rights and wrongs of any particular wars please, just a straight forward answer.

We will have to see. I am just curious as to how he can reconcile these two facts. On the one hand Dubya claims that God advises him, and on the other hand Fundamentalist Muslims also claim that God advises them. This seems to me to be a contradiction.

I still fail to see why DW should have all the answers.

As I said, I just wonder how he can reconcile these two faces of ONE God. Let's just see. He has asked some pretty pertinent questions and made some assertive postings. I think it is a fair question, he must have some kind of an opinion.

Assuming that there was a "saviour of mankind" born at all, wasn't it supposed to be sometime in August?

I don't think Tony Blair's birthday is in August, and if you are thinking of the other saviour of all mankind, he was born "allegedly" before Julius Ceasar invented August.

The whole boiling was cooked up at the Council of Nicea in 325AD. This council was called by the Emeror Constantine (whose mother "discovered"so many holy sites in Jerusalem and Bethleham).

It has all been revised at subsequent council and still keeps on being "revised" even today....gay Bishops, women priests, silver collections, posh frocks and silly hats.

Yes I did, in your original thread. The one you asked to be closed.

I cnnot see an answer to this question.

The simple answer is a god of any kind probably hasn't advised either side, if you believe or not in god.

The terrorists "Claiming" to have been given the word of God to kill the westerners and actually receiving the word of God are 2 separate things.

You call them fundamentalist Muslims. Don't be so PC. They are actually extremist Muslim terrorists.

Maybe you could ask God. Oops, I forgot...he's too busy talking to Bush and Bin Laden to answer.

Nothing more than the words of an intolerant atheist zealot.

BTW: I have to run. The big Ohio State v. Michigan game starts in a little more than an hour and we will soon be heading over to our friends house to watch the game.

Have fun with this discussion. I am leaving it as discussing it further with a group of folks who do not believe in God serves no purpose.
