-pops-
Under the latest pre-prime ministerial proposal being planned by Mr Brown, law-abiding youngsters will be given vouchers worth up to £25 to spend on sports and leisure facilities. The "youth opportunity cards" will be available to all 13 to 19-year-olds, entitling them to spend £12 a month in better-off areas and £25 in the most disadvantaged areas on local sporting and other facilities. From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4785222.stmI am lost for words. mark2
How strange that by the next general election many of these 13-19 yr olds will be voting for the 1st time, bribery coming from the top. seems about right for this govt. :censored:
catgate
It a cross between bribery and vote buying. But why the difference between better off areas and disadvantaged areas? Surely it can not be connected to trying to regain the Labour heartlands. ;)
r4may
youth opportunity cards !! do they count as income thus taxable ??? :P :P I'm waiting for bribe for the "Over 60's" (senior opportunity cards), shouldn't be long before he gives us all a bribe then take it away in another form.
Gandalph
Perhaps these "youth opportunity card's" could be pooled and saved up then given to the Scottish MSP's so they could have the roof repaired on the new Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh which cost £550,000,000 then they could go back to debating in it rather than hire the Church down the road at £20,000 a time.

rong
And I bet the builders won't have to pay, it will be us the tax payers.
catgate
Apparently the roof of the newly opened Welsh Taj Mahal is letting in water quite seriously too.I put it down to the fact that this government hasn't the slightest idea about managing overheads. andsome
This is just another example of Brown's stupidity. It is about as daft as the baby bonus paid to new born babies for the parents to start some kind of investment fund going for the little angels.Of course, remember also that the country cannot afford to fund Herceptin for young women with terminal cancer and young families. Typical new labour. Let's have another gimmick. Let the mothers die, then if the kids behave, give them cash to spend down the local sports centre. What do the B'liar and Brown supporters on here have to say about this?

Can't anyone accept that there is a grain of sense in attempting to keep the law abiding youth from joining their crazy peers in running around the streets?Thos. When we were younger we did not need sports facilities supplied at a cost of millions to the taxpayer, nor did we need featherbedding. We went down to the local park and kicked a ball around. We did not feel the need to get drunk or take drugs and make thorough nuisances of ourselves. It is up to the parents to bring their offspring up to be decent citizens, and NOT rely on the taxpayer to provide expensive ways of keeping them occupied. It will certainly free up more policemen who can then chase politically incorrect 'criminals'.

Why on earth should the taxpayer be expected to foot the bill for yet another loony idea. Can you imagine the cost of finding out who has been a good little boy or girl and who has not, as well as the millions it will cost to actually implement the scheme. As I have said before it's equally as daft as the baby bond scheme. Nanny state going even dafter.
Thos
Nostalgia hes nothing to do with this. But it was you who trotted out the "when we were younger" line. If that's not nostalgia for the "good old days" what is?You obviously don't think it worth piloting. I'm not so sure but I imagine it may not see light of day anyway.Thos. andsome
With Council tax, gas and electricity all rocketing in price, I have just received in the post a notification of my pension increase. After contributing ALL my working life I am to get the princely rise of £21.60 per month. LESS than these kids are likely to be paid to spend on leisure pursuits. GREAT. THANK YOU comrade Gordon. Remind me to vote for your lot next time round.P.S. I will of course have to pay income tax on this huge amount.
andsome
Just had another look at the paperwork which came wit the letter. It tells ma that the increase is 2.7%. WOW!!!!. I mustn't spend it all at once.
