Could someone please try this speed test sight I have been put onto by my service provider http://www.kbps.co.uk/index.php?option=com...r&Itemid=41 (link should take you straight into the test) and let me know if it is anything near accurate. I have always used http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.htm before and lately have had really slow results, the tec bloke said they are having problems at the moment.

Thank you Irene but what I needed was a comparison, thanks catgate that's what I need to know ie. that I wasn't sent to one that gives high readings.

My upload and download speeds using your test are 0.36 Mbps and 3.54 Mbps respectively.

My cable connection is rated at 0.512 and 4.0 Mbps - so the results are close to what I normally experience.

I don't understand the translations, Alan, but below are screen dumps of my connection speeds. Are they good or bad? Also, is there anything I could do to improve them?

This test showed over 4 meg for my 4 meg connection, as against others which usually show 3.8 plus.

According the the Frog results, Irene, you are getting about half of the rated speed. If you were on BT 2Mb lines, this would be sort of OK. I don't know how cable varies.

Be sure to take readings over a period of time - whole day - as speeds can differ widely depending on the number of users on your particular part of the network.

When I posted the Frog link last night I did a test and got 1.7Mb.sec - dreadfully slow and it showed by my actual download speeds. Did a test just now and got 5.7Mb/sec - which is reasonable for my 8Mb claimed service.

Another tester (used to be known as ADSLGuide) is Thinkbroadband. This is thought by some to be the definitive speed tester it's here.

As a rider to andsome's post (above) I occasionally get 12Mb download speeds for short periods. I think this is because where I live is one of the test areas (a chairman of BT used to live down the road) for telecoms development.

I usually use THIS but it is showing a low speed at the moment compared with my normal 4.5 or so. However, rong, it shows the same as yours which is what you wanted to know.

If you subscribe to the basic Virgin Media broadband package M your maximum speeds will be

Upload 0.200 Mbps (your test was 0.174 Mbps)

Download 2.0 Mbps (your test was 1.88 Mbps)

Hence you are running close to maximum speed on that test - but as pops says - checks at various times in the day will produce wild variations in speed due to sharing of bandwidth.

I subscribe to the next package up which gives me twice your speeds - but I'm not boasting. ...... ;)

I have actually been in touch with BT and they are upgrading me from 2 to 8mg, for free! They say it should be operational on the 20th. It'll be interesing to see what difference it makes.

He said that in my locality I may not achieve the full 8mg, could be just 3mg. I don't understand exactly why it should be so, but time will tell. :D

The Frog is showing my connection at less than half what the others show. The DEFINITIVE tester is showing much the same as all the others. So perhaps the frog is playing up at present.

I tried the link with thinkbroadband and my results were similar to the others, Speed up: 1.8Mbps, Speed down: 0.2Mbps. I thought it was an interesting site, so I registered and will get an email reminder to check my speeds for comparison. Lots of good info on there. Thanks pops.

I wish the upload speeds were better. I joined the BT Vault which I thought would be good to store movies etc., but the upload was painfully slow. It took over 7 hours to uplift one movie!! Then when it said it was complete, I couldn't find the movie.

I live a fair distance from my exchange and only get around half the 8 Mb speed.

As BT promised, my "8 Mb" came live yesterday. I repeated two of the speed tests to check what difference it had made.....

There appears to be quite a difference in the % increases of the two websites. Strange..

My "8Mb" speed varies from about 2 to 7.5 depending on the day and the time of day.

It also takes some time to settle down whilst the engineers adjust the settings at the exchange to cope with the improved speed. Don't expect any spectacular changes for at least 7 - 10 days.
