Do you recomend Win Vista?yes,no. Why?

I have heard awful things about vista but ive heard aful things about almost any OS so i wonder why should i get vista and why shouldnt ?

I won't even think about getting it until I know for certain that I will be able to use ALL of my current hardware and software with it and that it offers advantages to me over and above what my current operating system does.

From what I've seen of it and read about it so far, there doesn't appear to be any advantage on me making a change and I know for certain that there is some hardware and software that I use which is incompatible with Vista.

Also, I would never suggest upgrading a system from one Windows O/S to another - I've seen disappointing results all to often from doing this. If/when I do transfer to Vista, it will be on a new machine and, as the moment, I'm quite happy with the ones I have.

I have a notebook. Which they say is Vista ready. It's not ! :D

I have three external hdd's, I like to play some games once in a while and most important I work on it.

The last part is very important as many IDE's I need to work with are not compatible with this "wow". And the only thing that looks good, "the alt-tab" thinghie, doesn't make it enough for me.

It took me three and a half years to get round to using XP from it's release. I was using Windows 98SE before that. If it takes me the same amount of time to get round to using Vista then I wont bother at all because Vienna will be out by then. There are too many people having problems with Vista. I read last night that the built in anti-spyware come virus software actually only stopped about 53% of known issues. It's way over priced for what it is. People on other forums along with software reviews I have read in various magazines have said there is nothing new in Vista it just looks different and does the same things a slightly different way. In my view a total waste of cash and time.

Way over priced ? I heard of the prices in UK ! Dude ! You are getting ripped of ! :D Really ! I can buy in US with 99 $ the upgrade version of home ed and for a while that crossed my mind.

Even if they sell it at the same amount of numbers in UK (I mean 99$ in US, 99 pounds in UK) it's damn expensive there giving that 1 pound probably equals 2 dollars :)

Untill Vienna comes, I just hope that Linux support for 3D and emulation/even porting windows software will be 100% better than today. Then I'll just forget there was a MS in my life ;)

Well all Harvey Norman shops here - sell everything and computers - every town every state in Australia.

They are selling off cheap all XP sp2 desk and lap tops.

I'd buy one of those before one with Vista as like all new technology it will have teething problems and I have had them enough with IE7.

I'm just a total user and no tech, so I say wait until its at least 3 years old.

I swore then that I would not touch it until I could afford to buy a new computer designed with XP in mind. The same stands for Vista, except that I cannot see any need to replace this computer for some years yet. It does all that I want of it. Why do so many people feel the need to keep on paying out like this? Surely XP does all that it says on the tin, why change for the sake of changing?

I appreciate your stance andsome - you regard the computer as just a tool to perform certain functions - and I respect your opinion.

However, others like me, see their computer as not just a tool but as a challenge and a hobby. It is fun to try new things and gives us satisfaction when we research and conquer problems. The bigger the problem - the greater the pleasure at the end.

I have crawled over the internet and read the many stories about problems with Vista and the current shortage of drivers etc. Hence I am looking forward to March when I have my computer hardware upgraded and make the leap into the relatively unknown (safe in the knowledge I have Acronis back-ups of the XP configuration and a laptop to fall back on if things go pear shaped and the challenge beats me). I was one of the early adopters of XP so I am quite familiar with the possible scenario.

I find that when the weather drives me indoors, wrestling with the computer is infinitely better than watching soaps and reality shows on the TV . Or even worse - being dragged around the shopping mall. I bet even you can empathise with this.

I agree with you regarding soaps and reality programmes, but I don't share your sense of adventure. As regards being dragged round shopping malls, I usually buz off and look in camera, hi fi or computer shops and meet up half an hour or so later. :D

I am glad to say that the above scenario didn't happen to me as last year I just happened to try out Vista BETA and it ran nearly as fast as XP and my PC is over 5 years old!

I think the main reason why it worked okay is because I have a generous amount of RAM (1.5 GB)

I don't want to upgrade straightaway because I want to upgrade to the 64 bit Vista version which I will do when I buy a 64 bit machine also XP is working fine for me at the moment so no need to rush into it.

From what I have read there is very little software and virtually no device drivers available for the 64 bit version and equipment manufacturers are dragging their feet in producing any.

Hence the general concensus is to stick with the 32 bit version for the next few years until the industry catches up.

Far as I remember, there were WAY LESS problems with the transition to XP. Basically XP is an improved Windows 2000. So there you have it. I know I tried Xp when it appeared and I had no problems. Even on a system like 400 Mendocino (celeron with 128kb cache ) and 64 MB of ram. Of course it needed a little tweaking for it to run quite ok. The Help and Support service would slow down my system damn well. Problem disappeared when I got another 64 MB of ram.

Hell Vista barely manages to run with 512 MB of ram. They recommend 4 GB. I don't say it is the end of the earth but it's not quite cheap either.

A few years ago, just the simple need of upgrading my RAM would mean a tremendous financial effort. Now if I want to buy a new computer I would go for the best configuration on the market. And would probably buy an OS. I am much better educated now, since I know what someone feels when you pirate his own work. So I would buy an nVidia card, probably a Creative soundcard and some big hdd's, including an external one for backups. (I will have to thank this forum for making this one of the main cares of mine. THX guys ! ).

So ! Do I have drivers for these cards ? NO ! External hdd might be a problem ? Yes ! Can I work, as a developer, under Vista ? NO ! Can I play some "shot them up" games ? No. (just search theinquirer.net ) ANd this thing that MS would force us to look at adverts just doesn't suit me. If there were a trial version I COULD COPE WITH THIS, BUT WHEN i PAY hundreds of euros for something, I just don't wanna see it.

And the UK people just shouldn't buy it just because the damn price. My opinion: just outrageous !

Hi ... I myself am no gamer , So I can't see as to why I would want Vista , I mean xp does everything that I need and I have never had any major problems with xp , So I will keep using xp until its not supported

My computer is going into "hospital" 16th March for a multiple organ transplant comprising a new motherboard, Intel duo CPU, 512 Gb graphics card, 4 GB of memory and a Vista brain. Mid March coincides with us being away on holiday so the beast will be waiting for me when we get back on 2nd April. I am under no illusions that I am going to have problems getting Vista to work with some of my peripherals, in particular my broadband modem and wireless router, so I anticipate having a few frustrating days.

You may have seen in another thread of mine that the computer has got grumpy over the last two days with regular "Delayed write failed" error messages popping up. I have googled for solutions and tried a few without success. It obviously knows I am going to have its innards ripped out and is doing this as a protest.

So I keep coming back to Evesham, who have treated me well over the past 4 years and have, broadly, a good reputation, though I am aware of the reservations expressed by others. I am unlikely to move before April though and my basic spec is:-

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400

2 GB DDR RAM

320 GB SATA HD

19in Widescreen TFT

Vista Home Premium.

The only comment I would make is that for only a little extra you could have smaller two hard drives rather than one large one - and thus have a separate drive for back-ups.

I too am going for the Intel processor - in my case the E6600.

My previous computer was from Evesham and two friends bought Evesham on my recommendation. They have both been delighted with them and they intend buying again from Evesham later this year when the Vista dust has settled. My current upgrade project is by the friend of a friend who built my present machine at a very attractive price - and I am using him again for major cost savings. Otherwise I would certainly have stayed with Evesham.
