Tankus Posted May 12, 2008 Report Share Posted May 12, 2008 this is so trivial ...but Just binning the remains of my tea , and Its struck me how easy life has become since having a communal commercial refuse collector ...they will take anything if its in a tied bag , my last place I had 5 bins .the biggest one ( a wheelie bin ) you could not put plastic , glass, metal or paper products in it ...seperate open totes for those , with a two week collection , and a compost heap in the garden for the organics ...such a pain in the arse in a terraced house ..... Smell was an issue ... I had to wash the empty tins in the summer , and I needed a can crusher due the sheer volume of empty beer tinnies (the lodger , honest ) I prefer my beer in bottles ( that totes was always full too ! ) ..... I had already two warnings over incorrectly mixing my rubbish ...(its photographed ) and was on line to a £1000 fine for my next indiscretion ... ..we are not chipped for weight yet ....... but that is on the horizon !Now ...I just drop the bag off on my way to work every morning , no fuss , no bother , and no smell ...OK ..I still pay my rates with no reduction, and the collection costs are lumped in with the service charge ...but its worth getting the council refuse Nazis of my back , bet its burnt at the same place (Edmonton refuse power station burner ) .... Heh ...I do remove most of the surplus packing at my local Lidil Sainsburys or Asda though , leave it in a pile once my rucksack is full .... thats my bit ! %$&@ the penguins , gonna get me some AC next ....... artist Posted July 25, 2008 Report Share Posted July 25, 2008 At the risk of sounding smug - we shove everything in the one small sized wheelie bin (which we had to buy - they won't collect from large wheelie bins) except bottles tins and paper which go in another bin. After two days the smell of the office was inconceivable. I had to stop eating anything with onions to avoid the acrid wrath that permeated my nostrils. My productivity plummeted. This is collected fortnightly, and I fail to see how people can claim that this causes maggots and rats. It would take a tremendously large and strong rat to raise the bin lid. I don't think that the average fly could manage it either to lay eggs. We only put into it rubbish that is sealed in bin liners. on the alternative weeks a brown wheelie bin is emptied of everything compostable, including tree branches up to 3 inches thick. Every week, two small green bins are also collected. One containing tins, bottles and plastic bottles, the other containing paper, cardboard and cloth materials.
