Any software that does not exist?

I have recently, and quite unexpectedly, been retired. I have been a software developer most of my professional life, and I thought - why not do something useful with all the free time I have now at my hands?

However, when starting to think about it, it seems that all software does already exist...

Or does it? Do you good people of the Windows Forum have any suggestions what kind of software would still be useful to develop? (Stupid suggestions are also welcome; who knows, it may actually contain some good ideas!)

If it was unexpected retirement, I'm not sure if congratulations are in order. But anyway a hearty welcome to a new world. They say time is your own now but it won't be long before you will be wondering where your days have gone.

Desktop Icon Manager for Vista and Windows 7

Problem 1

I have placed on my desktop icons for shortcuts to various web sites and folders. The folders contain icons with shortcuts to other folders or web sites. Windows provides the means to select a particular icon graphic (ico file) for each shortcut. However - icons for web links do not "stick" and suddenly change to either the favicon used by the URL originator - or the standard Internet Explorer globe.

I have tried several so-called icon organisers available on the web - but none seem capable of circumventing this Windows trend other that the programmes that emulate the Mac or Dell docking system.

Problem 2

If you set the window size for a particular folder on the desktop - this will change after the next time you open Windows Explorer and adjust the window size for another folder.

It would be nice to be able to set the window size for individual folders and have it "stick" - and thus overcome the Windows behaviour of insisting on just one default size for all folders.

This is one of the new "features" of Windows 7 - which apparently was not designed to operate in the same fashion as previous Windows versions. Using the "open each folder in its own window" option it remembers the last window as a global attribute rather than as individual folder's attributes.

There is a solution for it - ShellFolder Fix makes Windows 7 explorer folder windows remember their size and position. Various versions exist - see the end of the first post in this thread :-

Hello Pat, well done for getting retired.

You'll never know how you had time to go to work, ha ha.

Hope you came away with finances sorted.

I was in software development, but the planning side - you know, milestones and deliverables - I am no coder.

Yes please I would like a bit of software.

I use MP3-Info Extension

MP3-Info Extension

Or I did until Win7x64 came along and now the 2004 app don't work any more. Grrhh.

It showed an icon against the MP3 file name that indicated the bitrate, such as 128, or 320, or whatever.

I hope you might be interested in tackling this little project, without project managers peering over your shoulder.

Thanks,

I too would like to add my felicitations and commiserations to those expressed above.

I remember when I retired I used to feel guilty, every week day morning, for not getting up and rushing round like a thing possessed. Some mornings I would suffer this guilt for.....oh ...anything up to 5 seconds.

In time it wore off, but it took almost a week to go completely.

As to programmes to develop, well I think what I would see as a very useful and commercially promising venture is a translator of jargon.

It really does not matter which operating system one looks at there is incomprehensible jargon. Some of it particular to a specific OS and some of it common to the hardware and BIOS. Not only that, over the years some of these jargon words change there meaning.

There are many people who are able to use computers but are unable to understand them simply because the jargon is impenetrable. It has surprised me how often I have been asked about simple things like "downloading", "burning", "updating" by people who have had computers for a number of years.

Then there are old duffers like me who understand some of it, but flounder about trying to sort out things like clients and servers. It seems as though almost anything can be one or the other, whenever circumstances suit it.

It is not helped by the constant introduction of new jargon simply because the old has lost its "geekyness".

Boris

Thanks for the info. However - try as I might I have failed to find a link in the postings that leads to a download - the one at the top of the page takes you to a registry cleaner. Google directs you to the same forum pages so is not yet of help.

I expect I am being thick again and the answer is simple and obvious to others - I put it down to my advancing years and silver surfer syndrome.

Edit :

Via your link I found an alternative called Desksoft Windows Manager Click Here which I downloaded and installed. It does a fine job of opening each Explorer window to the individual size and position you set up.

I am now a happy bunny for the princely sum of only £7.29..................... :flowers:

An application that can show a green light or some other type of indication when a system has loaded all its modules and start up applications and becomes stable enough to use.

I haven't seen that one around yet. :)

And congratulations, if necessary, on your retirement. :clapping:
