-pops- Posted January 11, 2010 Author Report Share Posted January 11, 2010 Has everyone side roads, high streets been gritted by the local C?Grit?I went to my local Sainsbury's yesterday after hearing that the more local Tesco, Co-op and Waitrose were all but inaccessible. Anyway, Sainsbury's is only about three miles away and is in Hampshire. I live in Sussex and, such is the geography of the roads it requires a short entry into Surrey on the way.It took me considerable time and effort negotiating the cars that had been abandoned along the road where I live (can't understand that, the road peters out to a farm track so why so many people should have been wanting to go down it, I don't get). I digress. When I eventually managed to get on to a real road, it was reasonably clear. Then into Surrey - quite clear and you could see the road surface quite easily. Hampshire? Almost a complete standstill with inches of churned up snow and not a trace of grit anywhere. The Hampshire part of the journey took 30 minutes+. When we eventually arrived at Sainsbury's it was mayhem. One parking space remaining, no trolleys and in the store, almost no stock. We left without making a purchase (well, there was almost nothing to buy in any case, nothing that we wanted). Out of the car park, traffic was at a complete standstill. A Sainsbury's delivery lorry had managed to wrap itself around the small roundabout at the entrance to the store thus blocking anything going in or out.Three hours later we were home. It's not doing us much good at the moment as the road outside the house has only one lane down the centre and there is about three inches of ice on it plus slush on top of that. The main roads are in the main, navigable with a lot of care.There is going to be trouble with the local Council, everyone is complaining about the service from them which up to now has been pathetic. The foot paths up in the town have never been gritted,(because the Council had none), and our local shops, the Co-op being the main one, are empty. No meat, no bread, not much of anything really. Boris Posted January 13, 2010 Report Share Posted January 13, 2010 As I post this - it is still snowing (but at least it is not heavy any more ! :) ) in sunny West Gloucestershire. We have had another 4 inches since yesterday, so up to 7 inches of mixed compacted/frozen and fresh snow remain on the road in our close. :( No one has dared driving down the slope today so far - it is foot access only here. A van did try coming up the hill this morning, but only got 100 yards before sliding back down to the layby at the bottom.PS I have a question.
