A plea from the minority

It seems to me as though most NP users are on BB. Unfortunately there must be a number who are, like me, on dial up. (In my case because BB is not available here, nor does it seem to be planned for the future. Something to do with "trigger" numbers. )

On a large number of occasions someone has posted a link to an alleged interesting URL and I have clicked on it, only to find that after waiting, with bated breath and legs akimbo, for an eternity, the realisation dawns that the "download" is taking forever and it is one of those sites suitable only for BB users.

My plea is this, would it be possible to have a "convention" of indicating, in some way (may be "BB" or "DU"), the suitability of a recommended URL?

An interesting idea!

But we cannot expect all members to follow a rule on indicating that the post is only worth a look if you are on BB.

You're going to have to rely on the decency on the poster and most will forget overtime.

I am on a slow bb which has lately been doubled up for free by Telefonica, but most of the links load fairly quickly, but i was on dialup in UK and often had to give up on links.

It would be a good idea to give a rough idea of loading times.

I also find the speed very confusing with three different figures ?.

I also find the speed very confusing with three different figures ?

Looking at your results the only 2 that are meaningful are the 2 figures next to the 'Your speed' indicator i.e. 424.32 and 53.04!

You are on a 512 kb broadband connection but you don't get 512 due to overheads which take up some of the bandwidth which leaves you with the 424 figure.

The 424 figure is the speed in kilobits and the 53 figure is the speed in kilobytes and as there are 8 bits to a byte you get 424 / 8 = 53 Kb.

If the third figure you are referring to is the speedometer reading than I do agree with you that it's confusing!

p.s. I know that you aren't in the UK but have you tried this Test as it may be okay for you to use I don't know?

Thanks for the info curlywhirly, bit clearer now.

Did your test twice, but it doesn`t speak Spanish. :D just got this....

We were unable to locate your speed test results in our database. To evaluate the speed of your connection, visit the speed test page and re-run the test.

The results flicked in the window very fast then went.

I shall tug my forelock gratefully each time you remember. (But there is getting to be less and less to tug as each day goes by!)

I know the feeling, but it hasn't detracted from my overall beauty.

I also am on dial-up and would greatly appreciate it if posters noted a heafty download.

As it is I usually don't bother to follow the link because I realize being on dial-up is in the minority at most of the forums I visit.

It takes me over 20 minutes to download a 2mg file so I just don't bother most of the time :D :flowers:

In my case because BB is not available here, nor does it  seem to be planned for the future. Something to do with "trigger" numbers.

I think BT have abandoned the trigger system and are planning to upgrade everywhere. (They just did my brothers exchange, which would never have reached the trigger level)

I went and had a look. I was astounded to realise that there is a promise of it happening about this time next month. I shall wait, all agog, to if it actually happens. The underground cable that feeds us was installed 67 years ago and is constantly needing attention. How that bodes for the success of the venture we will shall find out eventually. I was suspecting that rather than lay 5 miles of new underground cable BT were going to wait until satelite BB had taken off.

Incidentally. what were the two fellows doing on the BT web page? Is it some kind of telephonic perversion?

No - perversion is how you have your Windows theme - how can you look at that without your eyes bleeding?!

That said - they probably will replace the trunk with an OC line (will need to be done anyway) as satellite BB is on its way out (too expensive and unreliable for normal use).

That trigger system was a load of rubbish anyway. As I've remarked before, I live in the back of beyond but, my local telephone exchange was one of the early ones to be BB enabled. Why? Because the then chairman of BT lived close by.

NTT is offering 100MB DSL connection (B FLET'S) for free during a 1-month campaign. But I really wonder what's the point of a 100MB connection for home use? I already have a 24MB connection (FLET'S ADSL), and I don't feel that I need it.

Just because it is now technically possible, or just because it is free? Is there any better reason...?

I know you are only joking but you see my current income is $304 a month and my rent alone is $590. a month. I'm lucky I can still scrape together enough for dial-up.. :(

However, as soon as I win the lottery.....
