R:I.P Richard Whiteley

Richard Whitely seemed a likeable sort as does his partner Katherine.

I liked the story he used to tell. He said he had found a hole in the wall of the dressing room between him and Carol Voorderman and was about to call the maintenance man to come and fix it, when he thought "What the hell, let her have a look if she wants to!"

I think that Countdown will die with Whiteley. If it doesn't, it should.

It can never be the same. My heart sank even when I heard they were organising substitute presenters to take over whilst he was ill.

Couldn't agree more. Have I got news for you has never been as good since the BBC got rid of Angus.

Forgive me for bringing this to the fore again, but I have just watched the Channel Four tribute to Richard and I thought how superbly it was done. I had read that it was a tribute "cobbled together" in haste, but it was all the better for it. His friends, led by Carol Voorderman all contrbuted and I confess to a grin on my face during the programme and a tear in my eye at the end. Genuine King Richard (I am not allowed to say "d***") will be missed in an era of artificial celebrities.

I watched it as well and I entirely agree with you, Thos. Yes, it may have been cobbled together but all the better for it - a vast improvement on those tribute programmes that have been prepared years in advance like so many are.

I remember watching the programme which had the Amsterdam cat joke in it. I roared with laughter today just as I did the first time - and it wasn't particularly funny. As they say, it's the way you tell 'em.

If you want to know the Amsterdam cat joke

A couple were visiting London and they came across an up market petshop. The wife peered in the window and saw a very nice looking cat in a cage with a label "Amsterdam cat"

Not having heard of a cat specific to Holland she persuaded her husband to go into the shop and ask about it.

The husband went into the shop and asked the assistant:

"How Dutch is that moggy in the window?"
