I see no problem in the occasional extreme bravery award, but it all goes way beyond this. People in the upper echelons of show business and sport, get rewarded far too well as it is with their grossly inflated pay cheques. I had enough of a problem having to call idiots sir when I did my national service, and there is NO way that I would call anyone sir now that I don't have to. As for calling anyone majestic, just because of an accident of birth, that is completely ludicrous and feudal in the extreme. It's about time that EVERYONE was Mr, Mrs, or Miss. In most instances it shows that the holder has achieved a certain amount of competence in their specialist field.(I only say this because I have that title myself as do three other members of my family. Not that I use it very much now in retirement but it's good for getting seats in a sold-out theatre performance or a good table in a restaurant).Definitions:Mr = One who knows less and less about more and more until he knows nothing about everything.Dr = One who knows more and more about less and less until he knows everything about nothing.(PC note - in the above the term "Mr" is intended to envelope either sex and is used as an expedient for brevity. I would NOT however agree that people should retain forces ranks once they have left. It is ludicrous to call someone colonel or major once they have ceased to actually be employed in that rank. Thos Posted January 3, 2006 Report Share Posted January 3, 2006 I agree in general with all of this, especially the pomposity of retaining Service ranks and the ludicrous notion that entertainers should receive awards when their agents have secured them pay cheques beyond understanding.But there are areas where awards are merited. One being for bravery, as andsome mentioned earlier, and another for the selfless work many put in for charity. And many entertainers do give their talents to charitable causes and I have no objection to those people being recognised. John Major's work in opening up the Honours system was a good step. We are all likely to have different views, but my own is that I would like to see only acts of great bravery rewarded with awards, they would then have much more value.
