Water companies are seeking authority to impose drastic rationing measures if there is no improvement soon. Common sense would suggest some kind of incentive for jobs etc to move more toward the northwest. This way there would be no need to encourage more and more house building. It is the same with airports. How many people flying in and out of Heath row and Gatwick, in fact come from or two other parts of the country. We are lucky in Staffordshire, in that there are good underground supplies still available, and we have no shortages or restrictions. -pops- Posted May 16, 2006 Report Share Posted May 16, 2006 The water company that has been given the dought order is north of me so I'm not quite as affected.Something that irritates me about this whole fiasco (apart from the unrepaired, grossly leaking water mains) is that one of the reservoirs in Kent (I think) is now full to capacity but this, that and the other bans are in place in anticipation.I look out of my study window now and it is bucketing down with rain. The river down the road is gushing with water and the sluices that control the levels in the village ponds (fed from the hills) are fully open.There is no shortage of water. One of the difficulties with the leakages is that the old mains were seriously affected by the wartime bombings and that is why there are so many failing and needing repair, not just patching up but serious replacement.Thos. Must be on the scale of when they built the natural gas distribution grid. Other than the pressurised gas pipes are also the gas storage units it must be on a similar scale.
