I had Creative 5.1 but found, as I don't listen to music, or indeed have them switched on most of the time, that they extra quality was unneccessary. A few months ago something went wrong with them and I bought a cheap 2.1 pair. They take up so much less room, perform admirably when I want sound and I shan't go back to a better quality system.

Interesting post, Chris and useful to see how many don't invest in top quality sound.

I can't see the point of an expensive HiFi type sound system on a computer. Even the quietest machines make a noise which disturbs any enjoyment of a real sound experience. The only reason I have a 5.1 arrangement on one machine is because I was given it.

I am not a musical heathen, though. Downstairs I have a very expensive Technics HiFi system - well, it was very expensive when I bought it some years ago but I've not found a lot that I would exchange it for, sound quality wise.

Chris, can you define what you mean by the point one (•1) in the descriptions. I was under the impression that it meant the system was fitted with a subwoofer - e.g. a 2.1 system would have a stereo pair and a separate bass box. If that is the case then you don't have a tick box for a simple 2 speaker stereo system which one of my computers has.

2.1 Logitch 50w RMS, though I have a 7.1 sound card. Can't remember the model number but they cost £98 last year, that was with P/P and the cheapest I could find them.

Erm! Not sure I agree with the noise bit pops. I know you build some very quiet machines yourself too, but my setup is in the lounge and new tower picked up on Thurs. evening is so quiet that when I first booted, I thought the machine was not working. I forgot the monitor had been turned off after the blow-up. It is amazingly quiet and now on the floor at the side of my workstation, we can't hear a thing. I use mine as our music system. :)

Djohn, yes I'm dead keen on quiet machines and always build as quiet as possible. Even so, there is always some background noise which, for me spoils anything to do with real listening.

I very much prefer listening through a real HIFi separates system than any computer sound setup that I've heard.

I agree there pops. A good Hi-Fi sytem will always be best. I've not had one of those for some years though. My wife has a very nice, good quality music system in the bedroom [Panasonic] and we use the PC in the lounge for music. My previous system was very quiet but could be heard, this one I honestly can't hear it at all unless I place my ear next to the tower unit. I really did think it was not working when first booted.

Sorry Chris for going slightly side topic with this. I have got some 5.1 speakers as well but no where to place them, as we also have 5.1 for the TV. :(
