The Great North Run

Well yesterday I did my last training run, only 6 miles. Look at my training log by clicking on the Training diary link in my signature and you will see that I have tapered off on the number of miles I have been doing of late. In summary I have run a total of 391 miles. Have run the 13.1 mile distance of the Great North Run on 3 successive Sundays. As I have posted before my ambition is to do the run itself in 2 hours this means a running rate of 9.25 mins/mile but over the distances the best consistent rate I've achieved has been ~10 mins/mile. As you will see from the diary it has taken a long time to get down to this rate. I'm not too upset as it was obvious early on that it was going to take quite a while to recover from last years problems - being smashed up by the car then getting the stress fracture in my foot. Surprisingly, my elbow is now 99.9% back to it's original performance only the occasional twinge. The right hip and thigh has taken a long time though, even now it aches and I can feel things pulling as soon as I get to the tired stage when running.

So ignoring the reduction in time due to the crowd effect I am anticipating doing the run in 2 hours 10 mins. They appear to have modified the years start Quote "The Elite men and masses are due to start at 10:40" The masses have different coloured numbers, mine is black lettering on an orange background we - the masses - are going to be zoned according to the background colour. When the main race starts Marshall's will walk each block of colour to the start line. Sounds promising and might avoid the problem of the cheats with not a hope of doing a good run starting too far up the field and holding up all the faster runners. So I'm guessing that allowing 10 mins to get too the line I should cross the finish line at about 1 pm, with fingers crossed and aching hips and knees.

I think this modified start method should work reasonably well seeing how well this chip timing method worked last year. The chip is strapped round an ankle using Velcro. It's activated as you cross the start line and again when crossing the finish line. You then just bend down after the finish to remove it and throw it into a bucket. The results were posted in 4 days on the Greatrun website last year. This year I wont be able to see it as Herself and I will be on holiday. Still another innovation is that the results will be text-ed? through 3 mobile phones this year. I have availed myself of this facility with members of the family. Obviously I'll have my stopwatch going so I'll post that.

Im not running it id be dead after 500 meters im to fat and unhealthy. It has crossed my mind tho, maybe next year i could run it with you doug if i loose my beef and get healthy. ill try make my way to the finish doug to see if i can spot ya, and try get some snaps. I think i left it abit late last year as i forgot how packed the metro system is, so i had to walk, plus if i remember the Newcastle match was on so i may have left the pub abit late to get to the line  . Some Tents and marques are up at the finish already as i walked down today.

Good luck doug? Have you posted the sponsership details? I'll do the same as last year if that is ok with you. :flowers:

PS... I'm in Reading and have got to nip off now for a fancy dinner so I don't have time to check your site yet to see if the sponsership stuff is on there... but I think you should mention it in this thread so that those members who would like to sponser you can do so.

Thanks for your support Nel. I wont post the details here in public but if anyone cares to PM me I'll PM them back with the details. Home address is as was but have raised a new current account for the Hunters Moor fund. Wife got fed up with me swapping £'s from the Hunters Moor savings account to our Current Account and the switching out from there to the dedicated ING account. So I've raised a dedicated Current Account for the fund.

I would ask that anyone who does Sponsor me please to let me know their full name as well as their moniker together with the amount posted. This so I can ensure that I can account for all amounts at any time - just in case the rozzers come knocking on my door. :D

Thank you one and all for your wishes, which I do appreciate! More or less got everything packed now. Have decided to wear a blue long sleeve running top this year - one of these non wick ones because the local forecast says there could be rain on and off. This non-wick fabric is quite an improvement over a normal T shirt for running in the rain. If you should be watching and it turns into a heat wave, just say to yourself "doug got it wrong".

As I said earlier my number is black lettering on an orange background, 31326. So as they are Zoning us this year I'll try and start on the North carriage way, probably by the foot bridge.

Just sorting a few domestic things out for herself then an early night - I hope! We've had G'son withus for a couple of days feeling knackered. No joke with the bedroom door blasting open at 6 am with a Da Da! and he's only two and a half and trying quite hard to be a tear-a-way.

Has anyone seen him yet?!

I'm recording the run on my computer, so I will be able to "action replay" any guest appearances of Doug during the race!

I've been watching but the transmission has just gone over to the childrens race, presumably run earlier.

I thought I saw him earlier, about 6.45 am in a red suit getting into a red car, with everyone cheering. Then I realised it wasn't in the North-east but in the Far East!

Thos. :D
