Just occassionally a couple of geese will fly overhear honking away. As I write this a wood pigeon is "singing" from the holly bushes behind the garage. -pops- Posted May 9, 2007 Report Share Posted May 9, 2007 I am like catgate in that I will happily have the sounds of nature audible in the background but the whole idea of "music" droning on and on incessantly without actually listening to it approaches my idea of purgatory.I don't see why people feel they must have this man-made noise background to fill their lives. What is wrong with a bit of quiet occasionally? I often get near to despair when I see all these youngsters with these noise generating devices (Ipods and suchlike) clamped to their ears - or worse being played through a loudspeaker to contaminate the surroundings.OK, these may well be the ramblings of an old man but, don't forget that your hearing is precious - something to be looked after and nurtured, not subject to constant assault by a barrage of pop (or should that be pap?). andsome Posted May 9, 2007 Report Share Posted May 9, 2007 I much prefer music on the radio or in a concert hall. I do very occasionally however have Classic FM playing on the computer. I too get annoyed at the tinny noise emanating from earole plug in devices, and absolutely loath the junk played over shop PA systems. Sometimes when we are the bottom of our back garden, a car will pass by in the road outside the front of the house, and we can here such thumping. We don't hear the car, just the thump. This is what pops is alluding to. There is going to be an awful lot of problems with peoples hearing in a few years time. I have also wondered where all the musical instruments have gone and where all the cacophones have come from.When I was growing up in the 40s there were live dance bands all over. We could go out every Saturday night to at least 4 dance halls in central Bradford where there were good resident live bands composed of excellent musicians. There were also numerous local peripatetic bands all over the area operating both Friday nights and Saturday nights at many church halls, schools etc. This was true not only of Bradford but of most of the country. Up in the dales there was always a band or two to be found in village halls every Saturday night.What happens these days? Surely it can not be all mayhem and blood letting.It seems as though the "music" of the day is a reflection of the society of the day, but which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
