Are you old enough to remember these.

All the girls had ugly gym uniforms?

It took five minutes for the TV warm up?

Nearly everyone's Mom was at home when the kids got home from school?

Nobody owned a purebred dog?

When half a crown was a decent allowance?

You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny?

Your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces?

All your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had

their hair done every day and wore high heels?

You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked And, you got trading stamps to boot?

It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner

at a real restaurant with your parents?

No one ever asked where the car keys were

because they were always in the car,

in the ignition, and the doors were never locked?

Stuff from the chemists came without safety caps and hermetic seals

because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger?

When being sent to the Headmasters office was nothing

compared to the fate that awaited the pupil at home?

Basically we were in fear for our lives,

but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc.

Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat!

But we survived because their love was greater than the threat.

Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-moe"?

Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Do it again!"?

"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest?

Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening?

It wasn't odd to have two or three "Best Friends"?

Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a catapult?

A foot of snow was a dream come true?

Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles?

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.

Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin?

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon?

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have lived!!!!!!!

Do you remember asking what was this TV they said was going to come on the market?

I remember going to the Festival of Britain with my father, and whilst we were in the big city (we were there for a few days) we went to the Radio Show (Earls Court?).

There was a darkened corridor upstairs, with an array of TV sets. The best by far was an 8" Bush. We had no TV transmission up in Yorkshire until a few years after our visit, but father eventually bought his 8" Bush. It lasted many years.

GYM UNIFORMS?????????? At our school the girls wore navy blue or dark brown knickers and tucked their skirts into these knickers to do gym, and we called it P.T. But then I do back a bit further than you in time. :D

Car key left in the ignition???????? Only one man in our road had a car. We used to play in the road all day, and on a bad day we probably had to stop our game once or twice when we had the unusual sight of a car coming up or down the road.

Taken out to dinner, you have to joking, there was rationing on.

T.V.?????????? Again you have to be joking. I was about nine years old when a friends family bought the first TV that I had ever seen. My Granddad who lived next door didn't even have electricity in the house, he considered it to be far more dangerous than gas, because you couldn't smell it before it killed you.

Otherwise it's about right. :D

Not quite, but I do remember that the first television we had was a Ferguson Console model with full length doors which when closed made it into a 'discrete' piece of furniture. I suspect that the screen was about 12".

I remember watching the Queen's coronation (before we had TV) on an across the road neighbour's television. They had a room full of us kids, all sitting on the floor in front of the television. It must have had an impression on me, because I can still recall (in my mind's eye) odd shots of the black & white pictures which were televised. I would have been only 7 years old at the time. :)

This one: Your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces?

I wore them and they had seams up the back. A real pain trying to get the seams straight when you are bow legged like I am.

I wore them too, along with my 3.1/2" stilettos".

Those dratted suspenders always worked round and twisted the seams!!

Remember the Skylon? Just suspended on a few bits of wire. When I went I was very disappointed that the lead shot making tower wasn't in operation was told that there was going to be a demonstration of lead shot making. I also remember it being a very hot day.

Yes, I remeber the Skylon. I also remember the Guiness Clock and Emmotts Rotary Niggler and Fidgeter for the Featherbedded Farmer. Oh! and the Train. But I think they were on another site by the river.

I still think that suspenders and stocking tops look better than tights, on women of course before any clever comments are made.

The other problem with stockings worn with a mini skirt was that you couldn't bend, without showing next week's washing!!

There were two people in our road who bought televisions for the coronation. When the first one found out there was a second he went out and bought a colour television.

A colour television in those days was a sheet of clean plastic placed in front of the screen - blue at the top, red in the middle and green at the bottom supposedly to "correctly" colour the sky, the guards uniforms and the grass. Of course it was total rubbish.

Never got to the Festival of Britain although I've been many times to the buildings on the South Bank still extant.

On the subject of stockings, anyone remember Liquid Stockings? I remember my mother using this awful mixture of brown colour suspended in water which were painted on the legs. When it was dry a line was drawn along the back of the leg with a stick of charcoal or, if you were really posh, an eyebrow pencil.

With cars, there was only one car in our road but two motorbikes with sidecars (what happened to them?) and there was a huge coal delivery lorry driven by the people across the road. The underside was coated in thick black grease - I can still remember the smell of that - as I can of the horses who would come around (attached to a cart) delivering all sorts of things.

In the summer I stayed with my granny which was great because she didn't have electricity (she did later on) neither did she have running water so I couldn't have a bath.

During the war, while my uncle was away on board ship, my aunt used to stand in a bowl and apply a mixture of sand and water to her legs to colour them. I wasn't old enough at that time to understand what she was up to when she went out with her painted legs. :D

Did she do it all the time he was on board ship? Her legs must have ached by the time he got home.

I can just see the picture. You uncle coming home on leave, kicking out the cat, and saying, 'What are we doing with 10cwt of sand in the kitchen Doris?'

She did it quite often before she went out, when we were with my mother, who was baby sitting for her.

'What are we doing with 10cwt of sand in the kitchen Doris?'

Her name was May.
