Dencandy Posted November 18, 2007 Report Share Posted November 18, 2007 I use Windows own de-fragger, and run it at the end of every day if I've used the computer for more than, say one hour. Because of my work and interests I have a lot a lot of large Word files and think it helps them load and run quicker. To me, using a de-fraggger is like keeping your desk tidy and doing your filing regularly. Just as that helps me find letters and bills faster, surely it must help the computer run faster, although I've never actually timed it.Also, I believe that for a computer to run optimally and for a de-fragger to work effectively, you need plenty of free space on your hard drive (say, at least 33%) so the fragments can be moved around while the de-fragger is working and so that programs, including updates, can be assembled contiguously (i.e. in the right order & without any gaps). Mike567 Posted July 18, 2008 Report Share Posted July 18, 2008 Dumbest explanation I've heard so far, and very sexist.the Ext3 file system is currently the only file system which defrags your hard drive.How ever NTFS has a hell of a lot more advantages like disk quotas and NTFS permissions, and their are hunderest of third party applications which will defrag your HDD when it is idle.
