AlanHo
Yet another boost for our national pride - we came last in the Eurovision song contest thus reinforcing our standing in the World as the last bastion of taste and quality. To get the least points in a contest that attaches a high value to mediocrity was an outstanding achievement..... I didn't see it myself - I went to a dinner dance where a tribute band was pretending to be Westlife and Take That. The food was great and my companion splendid - but the music was just awful - all decibels and no discernable tunes. We left after a couple of hours with ears ringing and heads banging - but all the youngsters seemed to be enjoying themselves. The highlight of the evening was a lady returning from the toilets to the dance floor with the rear of her dress tucked into her knickers. She was a lively dancer and gave a spirited display for about 3 minutes before someone told her about it (after taking a photo)..... Click here
Irene
I think you had the best option for the evening, Alan, particularly the lady with her dress tucked into her knickers. I can well understand Terry Wogan talking about pulling out of the Eurovision farce. It's like a pantomime! Coming last means that the UK was the least nonsense!
catgate
Perhaps Cyclops should appoint a Minister for the Advancement of Mediocrity. That should waken things up a bit.We could then maybe take first prize for Profligacy with Production Costs.La La Laa Boom Boom.
Watchful
I watched it just to see if it was the same political farce as the last few years, and it was. It's no longer a song contest and we should not take part in it again.Wogan's comments afterwards were spot-on.
Belatucadrus
What I don't understand is why the Beeb still funds this bilge ? If it's profitable OK, I know it has a huge international audience but even then why do we need to pay to be dumped on each year ? I don't think our entry was a potential winner, but we seemed to have avoided the Gemini/Scooch pit of talentless awefullness that would have explained coming last again. Unless his actual performance was terrible and I wasn't sad enough to watch it this year.
Boris
I only watch it for Mr W's comments :D
Watchful
Our offering was quite good this year and the performer gave it his all. If rubbish like the offering from Spain, to name but one, can get a few points then there's no hope for us.Ours may not have been a winner but it deserved more support. Ireland saved our day. Belatucadrus
One also has to wonder if racism didn't limit Andy Abrahams points total. Recent events at football matches have revealed somewhat less than enlightened attitudes to people of colour from some eastern European nations. Though I'm sure we aren't allowed to say that. Watchful
I don't think that was the reason...I just think that we've no friends in Europe because it is plain that most of them vote for their next-door neighbours or chums
artist
It's a shame really - it used to be a SONG contest. I saw some of it last night- during the ads on CSI and it all looked rubbish to me!

Gandalph
I think Britain's song entry was a load of crap. It has been for the past few years. Don't forget of course when it comes to voting that there is a lot of Political voters as well.

Watchful
It wasn't a winner but better than the ones we've produced in recent years.
Gandalph
It wasn't a winner but better than the ones we've produced in recent years. In that case I think we had better pull out of the Song Contest in future years. It's a forgone conclusion with me that there seems to be no one capable of writing descent songs any more, so why bother with the selection process and spending all that money in entering the competition. andsome
I am still trying to fathom out why on earth we have taken part in such rubbish for the last twenty years, and why on earth anyone watches it at all. Together with the constant make over programmes, reality programmes, build this and build that, repair this repair that, buy a house here, buy a house there programmes, and constant repeats, sometimes after only a couple of days, British TV is now plumbing the depths. We can recall the time when there was only one channel - and that was only on for a few hours a day. Thus talent was concentrated in just a few hours. Today there are hundrds of channels and there does not exist the talent or money to fill them with quality programmes. Hence low budget, low quality, low taste programming to appeal to the masses with lots of repeats.
