doug
Having been struck with envy withall the posts relating to new PCs, I've taken the plunge and ordered a bespoke one from my local shop. Basically it will consist of an Asrock G31 M/B with a 2.8 Pentium dual core; 4 G RAM; on board graphics; 250 G C drive and 1 T D drive. An LG DVD writer and a Samsung set og 2.1 speakers. O/S will be W 7 x 64 bit, Home Premium. It may be ready by Saturday but have ordered no to play with it before the 25th. It will be installed with Avast A/V and was advised not to bother with a firewall because I'll have one in my existing router. Please camment as will on the above but my first major question is regarding my use of Outlook Express with I have used since 1900 and dot. Haing been doing a bit of reading have been woried as to whether it will reliably work with my new O/S, so I'm trying out M$ Outlook 2003. It was strongly suggested in the shop this morning to change to Google mail.So I'l be waiting for copious comments and suggestions re. all of the above. Boris
You may as well install the latest release - Thunderbird 3 :-English (British) version here :-http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/all.html
Dencandy
I'm not sure whether it's wise to do without a software firewall, doug, even though your router has a hardware firewall. The old, very simple and reliable Sygate firewall is still available from TuCows and elsewhere.Outlook Express is no longer recommended by Microsoft as it doesn't work so well with the latest something-or-other. They now recommend Windows Live, which you can easily install without all the extras they want you to have. But others have recommended other alternatives like Thunderbird.By the way, you mentioned most things about your new computer but not the colour of the case or any fancy bits along the edges. Don't you think those things are important?
doug
Er new PC will sit under desk so I won't be seeing much of it!
andsome
Outlook Express will definitely not be included with Windows 7. I note the suggestions to try Thunderbug, but having tried it and also Windows live Mail, I know which one I prefer, and it ain't Thunderbug. :D
rong
Someone on here said that the windows firewall is now two way and works well, and Thunderbird is better than IE and easier to use

Seshomaru Samma
+1 for thunderbirdalso Win7 own firewall is not badrun this command :%windir%\system32\WF.mscand you can easily tweak what is allowed and what is not. if you want to be extra safe allow only 'core networking' and programmes you use (skype or whatever) in your inbound connection
doug
Am now running TB 3 and have run into a sort of snag. I imported all my mail from OE and Outlook, which I was trying out, I am now told that I have 3000+ unread messages!!!!!! This shows up after I re-boot. Now I have read all of these messages in the previous applications. E-mails I downloaded today are shown as read. Is there a select all and mark as read option or do I have to wade through the lot, one by one?
doug
and another question. How do I link to, or import, my present M$ Address book?
doug
Well I've managed to answer my last question by exporting my existing Address book to a new folder then importing it into TB3.
catgate
....I am now told that I have 3000+ unread messages!!!!!!So that's why you never replied. I thought you didn't love me anymore
rong
was your spam box full
doug
No not spam, they just go back a bit. I'll archive them then reduce the list. That still leaves me with the ones I want to keep to hand. does it still mean that I'll have to open them all again
rong
as far as I know you can just highlight them and delete them, I will check later when on my PC.
Alan2273
Doug, if all the transfered e-mails are in a single folder, just right click that folder in the left hand pane and click mark folder read, if they are in several folders just repeat this process. doug
Thank you Alan. That was more economic than clicking each item individually.
artist
Thank you Alan. That was more economic than clicking each item individually. You could hold down the CTRL button and highlight a load together - then delete........For the spam, I just open it , check them, just in case I want something, then 'edit', select all, 'edit', delete selected messages. doug
You are well ahead of me Artist. Should get the new PC tomorrow, will then have to wrap it and hide it 'till Xmas. The tree arrives this afternoon, which is to go into a bucket of water behind the garage. Will trim and tidy it late next week before installing it in the Consevatory prior to G'children coming to decorate it. All this time I'll be thinking about the box in it's wrapping waiting with all the other stuff. No.1 G'daughter's 14th birthday is next Sunday and she is getting her own laptop with 7 x 64 installed, it's a combo B'day and Xmas present so we are being careful as to what we say - especially me. Should have put this thread in the lounge!
andsome
If you have just set up a new mail program, it has probably downloaded all those left on the server. Have a look through the mail program at the various settings. In Windows live mail and outlook express, there is a setting to leave a copy of mail on the server for a given number of days. I have ticked the box in my settings, to delete from the server once they have been completely deleted from my deleted items folder. You will find that if you don't do this, and then reset up a mail program it will download them all again. :D
doug
Well just booted up for the first time. does seem quicker. Now I've got to start transferring everything over.
