That is a very strange thing - is it a new Cornish fashion to wear different items of footwear ?

I do admit that my socks do appear to have a life of their own - at one time I found 11 odd socks in the airing cupboard.

Even when you definitely put a pair in the wash I'm convinced that on one occasion in ten, one of them just disappears - never to be seen again.

I have now got around this by only buying multi-packs (all of the same colour) - so even when I'm down to the last 2 out of 10 - they are still a pair :D

Does anyone else suffer from this problem ?

Is there an "odd-sock sanctuary" somewhere where they all go to ?

But it still needs keeping under control as this is not an adult forum and as such a bit of self control should be used by the children and if not they should be moderated and you should just ignore the ignorants that throw their toys out of their prams artist, keep up the good work. I can also remember someone moaning about the language on some forums who now argues about things not too far removed not being allowed on here

We live in difficult and changing times. It vannot be disputed that what used to be regarded as foul language and risque humour are now the norms in our present society. There has been a huge relaxation of old moral standards in the modern media - be it the newspapers, magazines, TV and radio. At the same time - the PC Brigade have tightened their grip on racial, gender and age related stuff. Hence the scope for humour is reduced - possibly quite rightly if done with common sense.

It is difficult for any forum to take the high ground and to try to be aloof from the standards now accepted by the young and the trend-setters in society - no matter how strongly we may feel as individuals that it is a backwards step.

Moderators have a tough job and I did not object when 2 out of my 10,200 posts were edited. I consider that what is now in common public usage - other that the strongest profanity - has to be let through the net.

If you find society's relaxation of standards unacceptable - then don't read stuff in the Lounge or Jokes sections.

I do nott accept the argument that this is a public forum and we need to protect kids - my experience of kids today is that we need to be protected from them.

I have nothing against risqué humour in the right place (the post that started all this it just went to far) at home watching telly or even on here but this is an open forum aimed at all and no it is not up to us to protect children it is up to their parents.

I for one do not condone foul language on a public forum. However, may Whitehouse is long since dead. To tell a member from across the pond to watch his language for calling police and detectives dicks was absolutely ludicrous. It invited and received justifiable ridicule, and the subsequent locking of the thread when a famous, and well loved British pudding was referred to invited and received more ridicule. For pity's sake, the censor needs to grow up. Just who did lock the thread in question, and why? The forum has a serious side, helping posters to solve problems, but it also has a light hearted side, hence the existence of the lounge and jokes forums. The PC brigade are trying to take over here there and everywhere.

Of course moderators are needed on here and all forums, but moderation as with all other forms of censorship can go way over the top.

The devil finds work for idle hands to do.

This is true of not just "Forums" , but Football Clubs, Choirs, Womens Institutes,Working Mens Clubs, The Local Knitting Club, and many, many, more organisations.

At the moment on this forum we find ourselves with "Idle Hands". - Why ?

Because there is an unequal balance between "input" - i.e that which is being fed into the forum, and "output" - i.e that which has been produced for the forum.

At present we find ourselves with more output than we do useful input.

As Irene pointed out recently, this has become very "Lounge/Joke Centred"

There is equal opportunity for everyone to submit "something" to the forum, whether it be of a technical nature, or merely something of interest for the lounge.

When you have agreed within your mind to submit nothing at all, there becomes a void. - In effect a vacuum that is almost begging to be filled.

When the void (Vacuum) begins to be filled with what some see a "Childish Things" "Profanity" " and "Rubbish,"

the people who start to moan and bitch most loudly, are the very same people who created a vacuum in the very first place, - by not contributing any, or of just 'minimal token input' to the organisation. (Forum)

Surely out of the regular people here + Staff/Admin there must be four or five who would be willing to contribute just one article on a weekly basis ?

It could be a collection of landscape photos. Perhaps some insight into a hobby. Your views on the place you live. Some photos of the village, town, City where you live.

Once again, primarily this would be lounge centred. But clearly it would be filling the "Void" with something you do like, rather than sitting back moaning about the void being filled with something that you do not like.

It is a "Windows Forum" and as such it should perhaps contain more technical questions and advice than the "Lounge Based" literature we have at present without a doubt.

There was a suggestion that some of the regular posters from bygone days be contacted.

There was also a question as to the reason why although Windows Forum.org is top of many search engines there is very little input from the internet. And dont forget we are talking World Wide Web.

Is there any constructive feedback that anyone would wish to contribute relating to both the above suggestion and question, or do people find it more comfortable to just bury their heads in the sand ?

Some of the reactions I have seen written in this particular thread I have also heard many times in different organisations. Some of the quotes are very positive and show a wish for the forum to continue and grow. Some other of the quotes show total negativity, and either wish for the forum to stand exactly where it is, or even fold completely.

One fallacy often used is "Well everything has a life span, and I think we may be reaching the end of that life span." - Complete rubbish of course, - anything can be turned around.

I will draw out a few of the quotes and highlight them, not as a personal slight to any particular individual but purely on the basis that I have heard them, and had to answer them so many time before.

"It used to be a good place to visit" - Why do you think that it is not now ? - How can we make it a better place to visit ? - How do you intend to make it a better place to visit ?

"If they find this forum up tight or old fashioned TOUGH ! Don't slam the door on the way out." - I've seen quite a few voluntary organisations begin to lack new membership, shrink, and finally fold up and close down for good after similar words and attitudes have been voiced.

"I can't be bothered anymore - worst than kids, on here" - In Choirs it is usually " Worse than kids in here" and usually comes down to the fact that there is more talk than music going on. Fill the void with music, and there is no time to chat.

Fill the forum with interesting contributions, and people become mentally stimulated. The consequence is that adults stop behaving like children. - Basic psychology.

The contributions though, have got to come from you, - you, - you, - and yes even you sitting over there with a cynical look on your face still trying to pretend that your lack of contribution had little or nothing to do with the current void that has occured. - Because it did. - didn't it ?

Even miracles need some human intervention

Perhaps I have missed some posts that are being alluded to - but I am quite unable to recall any posts by regular members that contained offensive or profane language.

The post that seems to have started this discussion was possibly the one by bludgard who used a term common in the USA referring to police. We have our own terms including cops, rozzers, bobbies etc. In no way can this be considered offensive.

I can only congratulate maneman on his latest post in this thread. He is quite right - the forum needs more general and positive input and we should all do our bit. Responding negatively with a few cutting words or just posting a smilie or two without explanation does not cut the mustard.

I went AWOL for a few weeks recently and was surprised at how many messages I received from members asking about my welfare and why I had stopped posting - hence my return. I can only assume that (since I am possibly the most regular Lounge Forum thread starter) my contributions were missed and that they are not found offensive. If they are - then come out of the woodwork and voice your protestation - or PM me as appropriate.

One thing for sure - the forum has been a bit more lively over the past 48 hours with this hot topic. There are two sides to every coin..............

Come on andsome your not that naive, my wife works in a pre school and wouldn't expect them to push something smutty as far as you lot did, this is not an 18 plus sight so lines need to be drawn, I have no problem with smutty jokes and love innuendo (use it all the time) but this site is not and never has been the place for it and is all the better for it

This is not a childrens forum. The youngest person who I can recall on here was fifteen years old. I would have no problem with my fifteen year old granddaughter reading the locked thread. For heavens sake, spotted dick is an old English pudding that was around before any of us was born. Here is a recipe, try some with home made custard. Dick as mentioned in the locked thread clearly referred to police. I don't think I am being naive at all. I think that to find something so bad in that thead as to want it banned is to be looking for filth where it does not exist.

No quite the reverse, if you read my post again the my inference is clear I prefer civilized moderated forums to the all too prevalent free for all bear pits. In my opinion anybody finding WindowsForum boring or looking for a "livelier" area for their contributions is quite welcome to pack up their baggage and venture forth to pastures new.

No quite the reverse, if you read my post again the my inference is clear I prefer civilized moderated forums to the all too prevalent free for all bear pits. In my opinion anybody finding WindowsForum boring or looking for a "livelier" area for their contributions is quite welcome to pack up their baggage and venture forth to pastures new.
