Now this really is worth while watching.

Dreaded wedding!

:0 You miserable old s*d!

I watched it all - Lovely ceremony, lovely happy young couple. I wish them all the very best. :)

Someone we know been married today then?

Even the most ardent republican would have had to bury their head in a bucket for the last two weeks not to know about the wedding.

That said I quite enjoyed it, my excuse is I was waiting for the Battle of Britain flight but the lead up was OK. Not surprisingly they didn't pick the tone deaf old dear who eviscerated the organ at my brothers wedding.

As you will have already guessed, that was my idea of a joke. I'm sick of having it shoved down my ear canals for the last two weeks. Today, it didn't matter what channel you turned to on the telly it was still being pushed.

I'm not a Republican, but I was a bit fed up with the damned thing.

The extra days holiday cost the country in the region of £6,000,000,000. SIX BILLION. Many small firms have suffered because of it, far outweighing the number who gained. It has been rammed down our throats for several days now by the media. None of us even know them. I can get excited about a family or friends wedding yes, but not someone who has riches beyond compare just by virtue of birth. They are NO better than anyone else.

P.S. Why should I be considered miserable because I don't like the feudalism of monarchy and aristocracy?

Plus it's cost every tax payer £273.00.

I avoided the news last night because of that fact. I did switch on BBC Newsnight however, and switched that off pretty quickly, it was on there too. I wonder if they will drop the whole subject today, somehow I doubt it.

I was going to say that that figure was an exaggeration but before posting I decided to google it and you are right :0

I would never have thought that the cost would be that much.

Even though I worked yesterday (because my contract doesn't recognise the extra bank holiday), it still cost my employer money as I was on double time although a day in lieu wasn't claimable unfortunately.

If your Contract didn't recognise the extra Bank Holiday, you would not be entitled to double time. Therefore in spite of the wording they allowed it, albeit not as a day in lieu.

The day was not an entitlement unless a Contract was not specific about the number of days Public Holiday.

.

andsome, I did not say that I was 'excited' about the wedding, I said that I enjoyed it and wished them well.

The fact that they were born into wealth should not be a reason to scorn them - sour grapes maybe...

I am also very happy that we are not ruled by military dictators, causing atrocities like those in the recent and current news.

Personally as I am retired the question of contracts doe not arise in my case. I think that there would have been trouble in a lot of firms if they had not allowed the extra day.

Sour grapes NO. Middleton's family made their pile themselves, Williams is inherited simply because way back in the past his ancestors became powerful my force of arms. This how all royalty and aristocracy started. I just cannot understand what the fuss is about in seeing strangers getting married, and having it stuffed down all our throats. I switched the news on this morning, and guess what was being discussed. For pities sake when are they going to drop the subject?

You called me a miserable sod because I don't like royalty, why should that be so? The country is split on the subject, with at least half disliking the whole concept. We are fully justified in having our beliefs, without being considered to be miserable sods.:)

Yes your right and the reason is explained below.

It's a bit of a mess but as most of the workforce were on the old contracts that did recognise yesterday as a Bank Holiday, it was pointed out that as some of these people who chose to work yesterday were going to be on double time and a day in lieu it was unfair that we would only be on single time not to mention the fact that we wouldn't be able to claim a day in lieu as well.

The management agreed with us hence the double time provision.

If the above was not agreed that only people who had to work would be allowed in and there wouldn't be enough staff to run the factory as only a few of us are on the new contracts !

I expect the same thing will happen next year when workers are awarded another unofficial bank holiday namely the Queens' Silver Jubilee

I'm not really into the Royal family but I did like Princess Diana and I also find Kate Middleton 'down to earth' although we will have to wait and see if this changes now that she's no longer a commoner.

I also have respect for the Queen who has managed to keep herself free of scandal over the last 50 years.

As you point out we would be very much worse off under a military dictatorship !

Yes the companies could have been taken to court for breach of contract !

In my contract it states that I'm entitled to 8 Bank Holidays (the royal wedding bank holiday would have been 9) plus 22 days holidays where as on one of the old contracts it states all bank holidays and 22 days holiday entitlement.

Heaven forbid a military dictatorship, but that is NOT the only alternative. The vast majority of countries do not have inherited royalty and aristocracy, and also do NOT have military dictatorships.:)

I suppose the alternative could be like in the US where it is a Presidential system of government ?

We must not forget that having a Royal Family generates wealth for the UK from tourism, etc.

I am somewhat in the 'middle ground' on this subject as I am not a Republican and I'm not really a royalty fan either !

Just an aside, the wedding I believe cost around £20 million, I don't know if that was the total or just he security as the family's paid for most of the wedding bit themselves and half the guests were probably down to the fact that the government wanted them not the couple, the £20 million will easily be recouped in the tourists it bought in and will bring in (if this government taxed it's mates properly the tax would more than cover it).

The next aside is that I don't see how you can hold them to count for the "£6,000,000,000. SIX BILLION" as it was not in there power to make it a holiday, it was your glorious leader (and sadly mine) that cost us the "£6,000,000,000. SIX BILLION".

Edit, I think the coverage before and probably after is way over the to as well.

I believe that the cost is down to the security side of things.

At least the Middleton family paid for the wedding itself rather than the taxpayer.

I agree with you that the loss of revenue to the UK was nothing to do with the couple and entirely down to MP's but I believe that Charles & Diana were allowed a bank holiday back in 1981 and if so it would only be fair to allow one this time.

Edit, I think the coverage before and probably after is way over the to as well.

Agreed although extensive coverage is to be expected on the wedding day itself, now it's all over, media coverage should quieten down.

Curly - I am definately with you!

For goodness sake Andsome give us all a break. I enjoyed the wedding for what it was......Loved all the fashions too, though some were a mistake.

Does anyone have the Daily Mail? Why do they persist in slamming Victoria Beckham all the time! She can't do anything right in that paper's eyes.

We have the Daily Mail every day - I do the crosswords and other puzzles to keep my brain active and scan the sports pages. My wife reads the paper almost cover to cover and is a walking encyclopedia on all the family, female, gossip and celebrity stuff from within its pages. You are right about the Beckams getting picked on - but I believe they bring it on themselves by the way they overtly court publicity.

I didn't watch the wedding because I was busy finishing off a DIY project which I must complete before we go on holiday shortly. I did watch the news and saw a potted version. It was spectacular and a fine demonstration to the World that when it comes to big occasions and pageantry - we are the masters. I was especially pleased to see so many ethnic minorities in the crowds waving their flags and cheering.

On balance I consider it right that we should retain the monarchy - I just wish that the royal family was not so dysfunctional - the Queen cannot be happy with the way some of them behave.

I see that they are following in Diana's footsteps and helping charities which can only be a good thing as money donated to charities has fallen recently due to the recession and people not having as much disposable income.

I wonder how much of their own vast wealth will be donated to charity?

I have similar thoughts when these charity driven television "spectaculars". How much money do the "stars" and "celebrities" donate to the charities at these orgies of self-congratulation. It's all very well bleating that they offer their services for free but but that is a feeble excuse - what they are in fact doing is giving themselves loads of promotion and publicity to encourage the rest of the fans to contribute more money to their overflowing bank accounts in some tropical tax haven somewhere.

Cynical?

Moi?
