XP Tweak

appears to be holding good for me currently, I've been through a number of boards via google and everywhere seems to have mixed results.

I saw somewhere in my wanderings that M$ suggest not to enable the Enableprefetcher Dword to 3 (boot and app prefetch) unless you have 512mb or more.

I guess the jury is still out on this. :confused:

I have 2gb of memory and I have just put mine back to 3 as I have started having problems.

Let`s hope it goes back to being stable again.

I've revised my oppinion, I think my initial speed gains were an illusion caused by reopening files still in RAM from previous openings. After rebooting, program opening times appear exactly as before the tweak, though I haven't had any stability issues with it.

I do not know whether this is related to the tweak but after the instability it caused I put it back to 3 and I also checked the system restore only to find all but one of the restore points had gone.

I could not access Steam and luckily the one restore point did the trick.

I thought at that moment it is time to test the Acronis back up, but fortunately the restore did it for me.

Could someone else who has done this tweak check if it has affected there system restore points.

Hmmmm. Were you supposed to change the value in the registry setting for prefetch? I thought I needed to just add the line "EnableSuperfetch = 1"....which I did and have had no problems.

I did this tweak after pwhillener's link on 4 August and all my earlier restore points are unaffected. I haven't noticed any increase in speed though and may uninstall.

Not so much too scared but it all seems pretty pointless to me, as I wrote earlier. Who cares if your program opens in 5 seconds instead of 10? Anyone who says they do care should stand back and reflect on that.

Sorry -pops-, I cannot quite follow your logic. In the old days when I worked with IBM 360 and 370 computers, it took 20-40 minutes to boot a system. It was a hell of a long wait when you had a lot of work waiting. Early PCs where much faster, especially if they just booted into DOS. However, OS/2 or Win9x systems still took some 5 minutes or more to boot. But it was still a long wait, especially if you had an urgent game to play, or some actual work to do.

Today most WinXP system boot in less than 1 minute. That is good! I don't think I live longer if a system boots quicker, or a program opens faster, but I can get more work done. Let's say I open Outlook, Firefox, Thunderbird, Word, Visual Studio, Excel, BOINC, Exceed 3270 emulator, Exceed telnet (2 or 3 sessions), Notepad (3 or 4 instances), calculator, SQL Query Analyzer - these are all things that are currently running on my system, on top of the startup programs like ZoneAlarm, Google Desktop Search, Windows indexer, Gmail notifier, Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot SD resident, ShortKeys, Cliptomatic, and Datakeeper.

If opening 15 applications just takes 1¼ minutes instead of 2½ minutes, that makes a big difference to me. (And no, I don't need these 2½ minutes anyway because I have to go and get coffee; I already bought the coffee at Segafredo on the way to the office).

So, to me it makes a big difference if a program opens in 5 seconds than in 10. But, not at the price of my system becoming unstable. For that I will get a new computer with the fastest processor and Longhorn (aka Vista) on it.
