artist
Any one else see this in the Daily Mail.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/arti...HEALTH&ct=5I take statins and I bet there's a few more of you on here. So - do we go to the docs to come off them or carry on until the next 'new' research is done??
doug
It just goes to show that living can be fatal.
catgate
It is another instance of Big Science finding what it is told to find. There seems to be no one who has not sold out to greed. Where does one go to find truth? Certainly not "The Authorities".
Thos
I take statins and I bet there's a few more of you on here. So - do we go to the docs to come off them or carry on until the next 'new' research is done??If you sway with the prevailing wind and change with each fashionable treatment you would get nowhere. Current predominate advice is to take statins and I, personally, shall carry on until that mainstream advice changes.Thos.

So - do we go to the docs to come off them or carry on until the next 'new' research is done??Quote from the Mail:"The most famous is the French Paradox. They eat more saturated fat than we do in Britain; they smoke more, take less exercise, have the same cholesterol/LDL levels, they also have the same average blood pressure and the same rate of obesity.""And you know what? They have one quarter the rate of heart disease we do.""The official explanation is that the French are protected from heart disease by drinking red wine, eating lightly cooked vegetables and eating garlic."Whooppeee... sounds good to me. I love vegetables. I could easily become a vegetarian if I didn't enjoy meat so much! :D I enjoy wine as well, but I do prefer white. ;) Seriously though, I have to go for blood tests next week. One of them is for Cholesterol, and I already know that I have a high level. I already take so many pills each morning, I don't relish the idea of yet another one. :(
-pops-
Having twice been in the position of knocking on the Pearly Gates, I'm quite happy to continue to take statins to maintain my blood lipids at an acceptable level - which it wasn't before I began the treatment. The "newspaper" from which this "information" is gleaned has a wide reputation of being sparing with the actualité. Any old fart can make an announcement like biting your nails can produces piles and the hacks in some newspaper somewhere will take that as gospel and promulgate that misinformation until it becomes a widespread "fact". AlanHo
It is the Daily Mail for heavens sake - not The Lancet. This is the paper that a few weeks ago started the scare that Atenolol (a beta blocker) induces type 2 diabetes. They regularly come up with some ill founded health scare story. The editor must be a hypochondriac.
-pops-
I take Atenolol as well.
Gandalph
I take Atenolol as well. This is interesting reading pops as my wife takes 1 Atenolol each morning and 2 (80mg) Simvastatin at night amongst her many other tablets. Irene
I take Atenolol as well.I used to take it, but my Doctor changed it a little while ago for Perindopril. She thought that it would better suit my personal requirement. I understand that it could have some adverse effect on one's kideys. Hence, kidney function will be one of the blood tests I'm having next week.
-pops-
I'm also on a "pril" - Ramipril. + Doxazosin and aspirin and Diclofenac. I used to take Diltiazem but that made my legs swell up.

andsome
No matter what I did regarding diet my cholesterol would not come down below 5.6, and the doctor wanted to start me off on tablets. I refused this advice and said that i wanted to try an alternative first. For the last few years I have been using Flora Proactiv spread instead of butter or margarine, and have been eating Benecol or Flora proactiv yogurt. During this time my cholesterol has bottomed out at about 4.6. BenecolFlora ProactivThese products contain an active plant product, and NO DRUGS

I would stick with the general consensus on cholesterol and take the article with a grain of salt.I have been able to maintain adequate levels on my good and bad cholesterol, although I do take an 81 mg aspirin daily. gordythegouge
I think...... a well balanced diet, ie regular, wholesome food, a little of what you fancy, when you fancy it, will do you no harm at all! They can give you prescriptions for everything now, usually another drug to offset the effects of the first drug. We have become a Nation of pill poppers! I'm as guilty as anyone, taking cod liver oil, garlic tablets etc., all in the name of good health. My father is now in a nursing home, double amputee because of diabetes, despite being absolutely physchotic about taking his tablets at the appropriate time, making sure his blood sugar level was checked 3 times a day, running my mother ragged chasing after him. He's now in this home at the age of 82 because his 84 year old wife could no longer cope when his second leg was amputated. Apart from the diabetes and the fact he's lost both legs, his health is remarkably good, and in fact has put on weight since going into the home. But he's not happy, why should he be? He's just celebrated his 59 th wedding anniversary in the home, Mum and family visited off course, along with some of his friends. The first annniversary in their married lives where they didn't share a roof at the end of the day. My point is, if you haven't got your health, and you're chasing any chance to prolong your life, despite the absolute deteriation of the quality of that life, somewhere along the way we've missed the boat!Eat, Drink and be Merry! For however long it lasts!!! If you fancy a piece of that Chocolate cake, eat it, don't bloody worry about what it's doing to your cholestrol! If you fancy a wee dram after your dinner, drink it! Your liver will cope....probably! Make the most of what you've got....and believe me.. I know some of us haven't got much...Take some time out for you and yours...there's always tomorrow and if there isn't.....at least you've made the best of today!!
