How would one go about directing PC World's attention to this discussion? (Or would that not be a good idea?)

I'm not to sure they'd be bothered either way........thousands and thousands of people make use of the facility.....and as it's been mentioned today on another thread, if the service removes viruses and spyware that so many machines have these days, then fair enough.

They provide the service and people make use of it....that's business.

I doubt that PCW or DSG would care one jot. We are a very small minority of the people who go to, and use, DSG stores and anything said here would be totally lost amongst the many millions (both money and punters) they will be raking in during the next couple of months.

I would say her skills are minimal. More like a crash bang wallop type. Never stops to listen. However she's mine.

That's NOT your daughter you are talking about there Doug, it's MINE

Many of us have got one (or three) of these to look after (us).

One daughter can be more than enough. (Bless her)

First things First. Howdy, My name is Rich and i work as part technitian part sales at pc world and feel it is my duty to answer some of the questions on this page, sorry if it is a bump and i dont intend to upset anyone. Apologies in advance if i do.

mark2:What!!! pay them, when I can do the job better.

indeed, your right to say this and ill explain all about a pc healthcheck later on. if you have any idea how to run some sumple gui then do it yourself

-

-pops-:I am told that PcW have some very competent staff. If that is true, I have yet to meet them (or competent staff in any other DSG store). On the contrary, I have been ridiculed and attempts have been made to rip me off.

So, to any DSG staff who may be here, remember that just because someone is in a wheelchair, it doesn't mean they are deaf, half-witted or ga-ga or even that they don't know more about computers than themselves.

I would no more let my computer be examined by PCW than I would install any Symantec/Norton product.

I do build all my own machines and, as such, I feel, and am, able to look after them myself.

i've never seen someone answer any question i throw at them no matter what its about (IT based), no doubt you may have been in a situation that a sales advisor will try to 'rip you off', its a retail store, i wont defend this.. FACT we pay pence for a cable and sell it fot 15 pounds wheres the justice.... HOWEVER i speak for myself here, i would never attempt to take advantage of the fact. not 2 days ago i had the most interesting conversation with a gentleman in a wheelchair, even tought me a thing or two about mechanics.

christmascracker:Just seen their advert and they say it is a 50 point check, anyone any idea exactly what they do?

This is a 50 point check of how your pc runs performance wise. I am unsure of the program that is actually run but it gives us an idea of where the pc is lacking in performance and helps us help you on ideas for upgrading.

-

christmascracker:Do they not clean the pc inside?

What miss a chance to fill the entire store with 2 years worth of dead human skin with an air compressor? NO CHANCE!, we completly valet the machine inside and out.

bvw:The thing is doug, would she actually know that they had done anything ? (assuming there's nothing wrong with her machine that needs fixing )

If we feel there was no sufficiant work needed to be done on the system then there would be no charge.. such as a driver update, 5 min on desk repair.

-

hope this helps guys ;)

Apologise for my bad spelling

Rich

I actually go to PC World quite a bit

I used to go quite a bit and walk out quite a bit as well.

Some responses I've had from PC World staff at Shirley have been :-

'There's no such thing as a 2500XP'

'That cooler's better because it looks better'

'Barton?'

and always 'No' when asked anything if it means them actually moving away from the counter.

I shop online now - Overclockers, Dabs, Crucial etc - or go to the Computer Fair at the Motorcycle museum (NEC) for odds and sods.

Sunday morning rant over.

It was good see the 'other side' :D

Don't leave us - we won't be too nasty to you!

PS I actually go to PC World quite a bit

I too use PC World for bits and pieces. I have to admit however that I have had some funny conversations with several staff who obviously know very little about the products that they sell. Unfortunately I have yet to meet one who I would feel confident in asking for advice. Nice to hear from someone who does claim to know what he is talking about. Please stick around and join in.

Ill be no stranger thanks for the welcomes.

though you must understand depending on the product its difficult to know about every product sold in the store :P cut us some slack.. but then there are some people in my store who dont know anything, they just have a good sales technique

And they probably earn the most money.

But if you are in a hurry to get a part, pc world are generally the only ones that are open later in the day.

Plus the small computer shops are only generally open from 9 - 5.

I have NO doubts about your ability at all. I fully understand what you are saying about the fact that the staff cannot be expected to have a good knowledge of every product in the store. However it is sad when a member of staff who obviously does not know what he or she is talking about concerning a particular product, insists upon pretending that they do, and ends up ill advising a customer. I have met the odd member of staff who can talk knowledgeably about a product, and sadly I have met others who are only interested in a sale. The point is that a store of this nature should give training in one or two parts of the range to individual staff. There should always be someone in the store who CAN actually advise on computer products, another on TV's, video's etc, and another on camera's. This more or less covers the range. There have been adverts in the press for staff clearly stating that NO product knowledge is required, just a deep desire to sell. This does not bode well for the customer. In a shop of that nature I for one do NOT want to be sold a product, I want to purchase a product when I feel that it is what I want and need, and there should be at least one person available who can help me to choose what is best for me. I do NOT then want to have over priced after sales warranties pushed at me, or indeed over priced credit, at anything up to 30% APR. Dixon/Curry/PC WORLD really do have to get their act together. Another valid point about the group that concerns me and many others, is this business of people getting home and discovering that they have been sold returned goods, goods which have been used. There have unfortunately been far to many instances reported of people finding other peoples details on computer hard drives for instance.

Where would all the fun go if they had any idea?

I have to admit that now and again out of devilment I have led one of the less knowledgeable assistants on a little. It can be good fun, when they put their foot in it deeper and deeper.

you make a good point andsome, I know a lot of my collegues are only thinking of the pay packet. that includes the managment!, I will allways try my very best to help every customer and im not just saying this, I will allways admit when im unsure about a question and ask a collegue who will know. About 99% of my customers go away satisfied and what they came in for. Also i will only lead on a customer if he/she asks about a certain product.

I could stay here all day and down PC WORLD but im off to work.. part timer here you see.

have a good one :)
