roadorange Posted January 9, 2006 Report Share Posted January 9, 2006 please recommend one and tell why?i was using norton antivirus before but it takes much RAM and slow down my computer, unless you have a good computer.Now i am using mcafee, but mcafee seems for experienced computer users.i purchased a laptop a month ago and have a mcafee with 90days subscription.After 90days, i don't know where to get free virus definition update.i heard it's hard to manually apply a free virus definition update if i don't have subscription. You must, of course use anti-virus in conjunction with other anti-malware programs.Have a search around here and you will find all sorts of suggestions that you can use for this.Be careful using things that you just come across on Google or elsewhere. Whilst it may be perfectly good, there are a lot of programs with very bad reputations which either demand money to do their job or, plainly just don't work.You can always ask here for advice. :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Watchful Posted January 9, 2006 Report Share Posted January 9, 2006 Without hesitation I would recommend Avast. It's free and you get updated almost daily. Easy-to-use interface and I haven't had any problems. It also has a scanning screensaver incorporated. It is the one AV program that I am aware of which offers not only e-mail support, but also telephone support within the UK. What is more they do NOT charge a premium rate for support calls, just the normal price. They are EXTREMELY helpful on the phone. so if you are a novice you have nothing to worry about whatsoever. Belatucadrus Posted January 9, 2006 Report Share Posted January 9, 2006 Another avast! fan here, amazing bit of freeware, highly configurable, even the free version, yet the default settings are as close to idiot proof as any AV I've tried (probably why I like it).Why ? :-Lower resource requirements than many competitors.Best update system I know of.Can be set to scan the PC as a screensaver.Can set a password to stop kids fiddling with it.ICSA rated with good pass record at Virus Bulletin.Stable, not crashed anything on my PC yet.Checks e-mail, P2P & Instant messaging. Free !.You can select a variety of skins to change the appearance, not important, but if you want to interest kids in security, the spiderman skin may have its uses. I have typically been a die-hard AVG user (and, do not get me wrong, it's a great program) but I'm really liking Avast!'s (can apostrophes follow exclamation points?) user interface. It also seems to comsume lower resources. I'm going to cast my vote for both though as I haven't had a chance to test Avast!'s actual antivirus capabilities (haven't gotten a virus yet...). Even viruses that aren't in the database get caught by it because it has excellent heuristics. So good, that I can't use it when testing new bad files because it usually flags them and quarantines them.
