Are Windows auto updates working ?

My computer running XP home is quite definitely set to automatically download and install Windows critical and security updates at 8.0 am every day. I have double checked this.

I sometimes get a flag pop up fom the taskbar to tell me Windows is being updated - but cannot recall seeing one for a week or two.

I therefore went onto the MS Update site at 9.30 this morning and checked - to find that there were 7 critical updates required. I wonder how this can be - the computer should theoretically have checked for itself 90 minutes ago - or yesterday - or the day before etc.

See screen shot of the downloads required - can anyone offer an explanation?

Something was strange about today's updates. I had the yellow auto-update icon waiting in the systray this morning. I clicked it and told it to proceed with the downloads. The icon disappeared ... and never came back.

After lunch I ran http://update.microsoft.com/ - that downloaded and installed the updates.

Not sure if this could be caused by a congestion at the Microsoft update servers?

To add to my concerns - it so hapeens that yesterday I ran the MS Baseline Security Analyser which reported one update missing - which I downloaded.

Is it possible that Microsoft have issued a further 7 updates all at once and after 8.0 am this morning ?

And another thing. I have just been playing on the update site to check through my history of downloads etc when I decided to read through the FAQ section.

I saw a reference that it was necessary to add MS Update to my list of trusted websites - which I set out to do by copying and pasting the URL they give

However - I then get an error message that the URL must be prefixed by https and not just http.

What is all this about - surely Microsoft would not have such an error on their website ?

I had a similar problem - but when I went back to the update site about five mins later it all worked ok.

How many updates are there, AlanHo has seven andsome six and I've got five, presumably all XP SP2 systems, what gives ?

I had 7. I downloaded them but generally if I wait a short while they come along via the automatic update feature.

Thos.

I think MS ration the distribution of updates to prevent congestion of their servers - that's why some people get them later than others.

Regarding the number of updates, this machine had eight this morning, my other two had five. The MS differences between the machines is that this one has Office XP installed (the others have OpenOffice).

The s in https stands for secure Alan, if you didn't know that already. Like you I had been flagged last night to say that there were updates available, then nothing happened. Again when I turned on tonight at about 18:30 the same thing happened, auto update flagged me again to indicate updates were available but up to now nothing has downloaded. I'm giving it till midnight to decide what it wants to do, if nothing happens by then I will be doing a manual download I think.

Actually... auto updates don't seem to work for me either, my comp tells me there is an update but never downloads it, so I go to Windows Updates and do it manually too.

I feel a reformat coming on... it's been about 18 months since the last one. B)
