It just makes one wonder about the age and intelligence of the people behind this operation when they "release" stuff such as this :-

http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/

(or did it just escape)?

Just been looking at that. I gave up, what a load of juvenile crap. :D

I'll volunteer to use this browser. As soon as I can find a download link! :)

EDIT: http://chrome.google.com Not working at the moment... but this is where Google tells us to download from in the Help section.

EDIT2: The EULA is quite clean other than the obvious. Google uses ad's on web pages for revenue. This is part of the EULA.

EDIT3: Download is now LIVE! http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/goo...e-now-live.html

So far so good! B)

Install took about 2 minutes on high speed. The installer downloads the actual browser during setup. My settings were imported from Firefox quick and easy.

Things I don't like so far:

No Customization. You have options for about 10 different things like if you want a blank page, or you home page on startup, where to save downloads, and whether or not to allow Google to collect usage data.

I'm having a problem with my mouse. I use a laptop with a touch pad, which has a scroll bar on the side of it. I drag down and the page scrolls for me. Chrome goes so fast I can barely stop it when I want it stopped.

Back to Firefox (for now...)

You're a brave chap and in my opinion you should be awarded the Yorkshire Award for Bravery.

It is a leather medal with a tripe centre.

I have downloaded Chrome and spent just an hour playing with it. I was impressed with the ease of installation and how it copied all my favourites, password store etc from IE7 - but once I started using it my enthusiasm waned.

My lack of enthusiasm may be the result of me not finding some well hidden features and I found it hard work.

I cannot see how you place a print icon on the toolbar - or invoke a page set up function.

The spell checker seems to be permanently on in auto mode and underlines mis-spelt words. You then right click and a small window opens with suggestions. I was not impresses with its ability to spot wrong words or the very limited choice of corrections if it did.

Where is Auto-fill for forms etc.

Where is the pop-up blocker and controls

And that's just for starters.

On first evidence - I doubt that I will be using it.

This is an article from the PCA website on 28th August. It makes IE8 sound much more appealing...................

and possibly explains why certain people stick with IE rather than Firefox.

You remember Internet Explorer, right? Rubbish web browser used only by people who clung to AOL dialup until someone told them t'interweb lives in the blue 'e' on their desktop.

Well IE is back - and this time it's sexy. Fed up with Firefox's 'always clear my private data' hoovering up one-handed surfers (should that be wiping up?), Microsoft has included in the latest beta of Internet Explorer: 'InPrivate Browsing'.

Close an InPrivate Browsing session, and all traces of your web wonderings vanish. Cookies, temporary internet files, browsing history, form information, usernames, passwords. Gone. All you have to do is shut down when you hear the key hit the lock.

Rather sweetly, Microsoft says (and may even believe) this feature exists so you can buy your partner a secret gift. It will certainly have positive benefits when using shared computers for webmail or online banking (although I'd avoid both). But you and I are both adults, dear reader, and we understand why cheeky scamps in the blogosphere now refer to IE8 as 'the porn browser'.

There's more. Also in IE8 Beta 2 is InPrivate Blocking. This feature prevents websites from sharing information about you without your knowledge. No matter how nicely they ask, IE8 won't allow the site you're visiting to send data to third-party sites.

As well as luring back tech-savvy porno fiends and philandering web-daters, and acting as a sop to privacy campaigners, Microsoft has commercial reasons for encouraging libertines to surf in secret. It's gonna rile Google. Real bad.

By helping users access websites in secret, such sites can't collect data about the filthy little sods. This will, in turn, make it harder to sell targeted advertising against their grubby little search queries and email threads.

Google is, of course, the muscled, moustached washing machine repair man of the targeted online-advertising world. Little old Microsoft is a wallflower, desperately fluffing Yahoo, hoping for a piece of the action.

Privacy campaigners, porn lovers and Microsoft. An unholy trio indeed. But remember: if they succeed in ridding us of targeted ads, we'll probably have to pay for our porn. And if I remember my youth correctly, that means uncomfortable conversations in petrol stations.

Firefox has 2 'private browsing' add-ons. It also has a "Clear Private Data" option under Tools. Ctrl+Shift+Del is the shortcut key.

Distrust

Stealther

Also, some people have been on this subject in Firefox since the beginning of the year. (Note the date - January 2008) https://wiki.mozilla.org/PrivateBrowsing

chrome's put the auto-fill, the search, and the address bar all in one bar, which i think they call the omni-bar, u just type an address, or a word in and it will either search for it, or go to it, depending on what u've done, also, in options, u can enable a HOMEPAGE button, and another thing is, there's this button somewhere that will turn on the bookmarks bar, then there will be one small menu, which will have all the favourites/bookmarks uve imported, and those u can drag and drop onto the empty spaces on the bookmarks bar, and u can start an "incognito" window, which is supposed to stop anything from saving onto ur computer by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+N, or u can start one in options, oh, and ur bookmarks bar might disappear if u dont set bookmarks bar to always show (right click bookmarks bar, then click "always show bookmarks bar")

google chrome runs at around the same speed as firefox, so in the end, it'll be better than IE, i certainly cant see anything IE's got over it, except for maybe RSS feeds, which i dont even use anyway
