Andy-2004
Hi, You guys are always very suportive over things like this,My sister, Suzanne, aged 12.....Has a condition called spinal muscular atrophy,It basically is a weaking of the bodies muscles.....She cannot walk but in any other way she is a "normal" 12 year old.....going to mainstream school etc.....One of the standard effects of the SMA, is a curve in the spine....this curve can be quite sever in some people....and my sister has it "quite" badly....However much this in itself is not strictly life threratning, there is a operation that you can go through that will correct the curve....My sister is going through this operation on monday morning.....she goes in on sunday night and the accual operation is on monday....So really i am just telling you all and asking for your thoughts and prayers that everything goes ok....thanksandy

-pops-
Best wishes from all of us.My elder son is a medic and he says this operation is a bit like metalwork and is one of the most successful orthopaedic operations that's done. He can add to that: orthopaedic surgery as a whole is the most successful area of surgery so we're all pretty sure that everything will be AOK. :)

Andy-2004
First off,Everything is okAnd to start id like to say my sister is one brave person,Sunday evening : went in to the hospital, as told, had the blood tests etc, then they were told they might as well go home for the night, but they decided not to as all thier clothes and stuff were at the hospital....went to the cinema...lolMonday Morning : woke up after a geat nights sleep, still no crying or even a little felling worried/sad, 8:30 - 9:00 Was called for op, Was a little worried and there was a little crying and was sick once with nerves, went into theatere at around 9 for 6 hour operation, didnt hear anything untill 5 hours later when the surgion came down to say every thing was going according to plan and that he couldnt have hoped for a better result, took another hour in theatere to finish up with the (here goes) aniethisist ( :P )then my mum was allowed in to intensive care, as soon as she heard my mums voice the apparently was a response, (opened eyes a little)during the operation she needed 4 units (possilby pints (im not sure what a unit is))These bags of bloob contained mostly red blood cells (oxygen carrying ones)therefore, since my sisters body couldnt produce platlets quick enough (blood clotting cells) they have had to give her 2 bags of plasma, she spoke once when she wanted to be turned over onto her side, then just 30 mins ago, she woke up quite a bit and tryed to speak, she couldnt because of the ventilator so she wrote on paper,"what time is it""my back hurts a bit"and somthing else i forgetso she will be in intensive care for the tomorrow and hopefully into a ward tomorrow night or wedensday,She is doing well, il keep you updatedAndy
