So when SP2 does become available will you be reformatting and reinstalling XP with SP2 or will you slipstream?

Or are you going to just update like you "usually do" via Windows Update?

Or will you not bother at all with SP2.

Hi

I will not be re-formatting to install SP2, although i would like to download the whole of SP2 and store it on my hdd. That way i will slipstream it with XP, and when i next need to do a format it will get installed along with XP.

I shall instal it straight away - someone has to be a pioneer - and if I get into deep trouble I shall simply post here in the hope that one of you cautious guys can sort me out whilst sucking air through your teeth in time honoured "I could have told you so" fashion.

If you want to learn to swim - jump in the deep end.

I voted yes to formatting, but i'm not really sure what i will do yet.

I have several images created by Drive Image 2002, one of which is Windows XP SP1 on its own. So i may just restore that clean image and install SP2 over the top.

Craig.

Been using it since beta1. beta RC2 was so stable I have been installing it on customers PC's for a couple months. No issues from any of them. It ain't the end all to windows security problems, but it is a huge step in the right direction.

I highly recommend everyone install it. There is absolutely no need to format to install it. In fact I can't even comprehend why that would even be a consideration.

Why would anyone even consider formatting before installing a service pack?

I am puzzled. There appears to be a state of near paranoia on the forum over SP2. I fully intend to wait awhile before installing it just as a precaution, but surely it has been designed to download to all computers running XP, with or without SP1, otherwise WHAT is the point of it? Surely there is no intention to bugger up several million computers.

Think I might be careful and take an image and then just install SP2 and see what happens. Don't really worry about things though am sure I would if something went wrong!

Will just install it on my PC at work to see what does/doesn't work but hopefully there won't be any problems.

The problem will be in knowing if there is a problem with SP2 or with something else. SP2 might be fine on a clean install but with all the other things installed could run into problems. Would rather not have to rebuild the PC as it would take forever but am sure it would benefit from it!

No doubt the press will be full of tales of woe when the "public" start to install SP2 but no more so than it would be if M$ hadn't released something to tighten XP up a bit.

Me, likewise, andsome. The excitement SP2 is creating is akin to a new product launch.

It should be borne in mind it is a patch to a faulty Windows product, not a product in itself. That being so, there should be no need to reformat of make any alterations to a machine except install the patch.

Like you, I am waiting a good long time before installing. I'm also making doubly sure that I have one or two good images of all my working systems before even thinking about it.

Although I wasn't affected by the fiasco that was SP1 - and other Windows updates and patches, a lot of people were and I'd be much less than happy if SP2 did anything similar to me. If it did, it would be straight in the open top filing cabinet that sits in the corner, never to be seen again.

If you want to learn to swim - jump in the deep end.

I'm still paddling in the shallow end with Win98SE, and oddly enough I have no intention of going toward the deep end unless I am forced to do by cicumstance. My deep end may then be Linux.
