Which antivirus is the best?

I cant say which one is good or bad, When i used Free Avg on my desktop, i had many trojans when i checked with Norton 360, on second when i used avast on lappy [Laptop] McAfee detected one virus in it, so it all makes me so confused, even recently when my McAfee got expired and i used norton 360 it detected virus, so i think the big bugs are all these antivirus, but yea cant even work even without them especially on web.

So now i have decided to use some other Antivirus and see how they functions, any more ideas guys on something good one..

Norton is dire. Avg is much better. Many people on this forum like Avast:-

I have seen on this and other forums plenty of problems with some of the free ones. but have NEVER seen any problems with Nod 32 full security suite. It is worth every penny, and even offers telephone help with very knowledgeable people at the other end of the phone.

Looking for more commission

I use Avast free now and have it installed on 7 computers of mine and friends for the last couple of years, before this I used AVG free until a windows update caused problems and they didn't sort it out.

I have it on W7 desktop and XP laptop. Friend uses it with Vista.

I use Avast cause it's free and doesn't take much memory

But anti virus is just one component in internet security.

The browser is another important component (using IE6 is just asking for trouble)

Firewall is another (for some reason many people don't bother with it)

But the most important component is the user

Many people assume that because they have an anti virus they are 'safe'

You can also look at some independent testers such as AV-Comparatives (My link) But, as others have written, what may work well on my set-up may not work well on yours. And, as Seshomaru Samma wrote, one of the most important factors is the user. Even the best A-v software won't protect from risky surfing behaviour.

Hardly likely then that millions of people and corporations use it.

Well, I have been using Panda antivirus for a while now. It seems to be performing quite well and is using less resources. I use to use Avast, but I felt it was bogging down the system more than it needed to be.

Chopped pork or not QuickHeal does have a reasonable pass rate at VirusBulletin, but $74 A year OUCH!! :0

If we are talking about Free AV products then the best of the best is Microsoft Security Essentials.

AVG is the worst in my opinion, and is also the worst for causing bsod.

Avast isn't much better than AVG for that matter.

Avira, I would say second best.

For paid AV products Kaspersky is the best :D

Norton is just plain crap :)

All my opinion by the way, and i say all this as i have had a lot of experience in most AV products through testing.

Note; AV products do not respond or Act the same on different pc's this is because of the type hardware each pc's has plus other things, so the only real possible way is to see whats best for you is to test it for yourself, No one can actually say whats best for your pc alone. :P

As stated.........All down to personal opinion of course.

As Domestic/Home computer users we are not under the same sort of threat as Government Departments, Banks, Big business, etc.

Any home user who thinks that they are is being a wee bit paranoid.

We all have a duty of care to make sure that our computers are not infected and used for nefarious purposes. (i.e - DDOS Attacks etc.)

An eminent security person recently suggested that most anti-virus protection available is 100% ineffective against what is now out there.

Yep ! by all means find the best that you can to stop the known "nasties" getting in, but dont forget the stuff that is getting "Out" from your computer.

You do need a good Firewall to stop stuff being fed "From" your computer. This can be Software or Hardware based.

If you have gone to the wrong website, or used pirated software, most times there is going to be a new form of rootkit in there that has got past your free or paid for anti-virus. If that should happen, you've got to make darn sure that E.T doesn't phone home. (i.e A good firewall blocking outgoing stuff.)

It always amazes me that people will spend hours arguing and debating the best anti- spyware, anti-virus,and anti just about everything on forums, and never consider using Virtual Machines, or Virtual operating systems to test out software or surf the internet. You can even use the internet with a Linux live CD if paranoia takes a real grip. :D

None of my "Real" operating systems have been near the internet for years. Setting up this stuff is a no brainer even for me who I may add is not the sharpest knife in the block. :)

You surf the net, you check out new software, - when you are finished you throw the operating system out, and start to use a new one.

I'll give you a few clues, - and it's all free stuff.

(Returnil is about the best of the bunch for general computer usage. - I was a beta tester on this one. )

There is plenty more free out there if you look around.

Even virtualised.......... Still worry about what is going out Fit up and configure a good firewall.
