I am grieving

My wife died this morning aged 63 after a long battle with lung cancer.

Like most people our age - she was exposed to smoke as a child because her parents smoked, she then went to work on a smoky bus to work in a smoky office, evening entertainment was usually at a dance, cinema, club, bar etc sharing other peoples smoke and she herself smoked from the age of 26 (5 to 10 a day) until aged 41 when we both gave it up completely 22 years ago.

Over the last month she has been under the care of the Macmillan cancer care nurses and in her final days she was admitted to a local Marie Curie hospice. I have nothing but immense admiration for both organisations which provided the most tender and loving care for her to ensure she was comfortable and pain free.

The Macmillan and Marie Curie organisations both depend heavily on donations. Please give them your consideration - you never know when any of us might appreciate their existence.

One last thought - and this is my thought for today - those of you who currently smoke should stop smoking immediately. If you ever saw how much people suffer when dying of lung cancer you would appreciate why I say this.

You know it makes sense.

Alan.

Thank you for sharing this with us Alan, it will probably help having done so. I extend my deepest sympathies to you and all your family. I too wish that people would not smoke, my mother also died with smoke induced lung cancer. It upsets me greatly that so many young people take up this disgusting habit, partly due to peer pressure. I smoked during the years when we knew little or nothing about smoking related disease. there were adverts like, 'Craven A soothes the throat', and 'You're never alone with a Strand', thank goodness these have all been banned.

Never mind the so called freedom of the smoker, if people want to inflict this terrible disease upon themselves, then so be it, but others should not be forced to inhale their smoke. It should be banned from all public places.

Keep your chin up old friend, and I hope that your God is with you.

My condolences Alan, I would also like to agree with you on the care of the Marie Curie hospices, my young cousin died with cancer a couple of year ago at the age of just 35 leaving behind two teenage kids, a very sad time, but everyone agreed the staff of the Marie Curie hospice were fantastic and as you said they do everything they can to ensure that the patient is as comfortable and pain free as can be.

I am so sorry to hear this news Alan. I have known for some time of your wifes ill health and your devotion to her. It always gave me personal strength to watch how you coped with this and still managed to retain a terrific sense of humour.

I hope this inner strength will help to ease your burden over the coming months. The pain you feel now will never go away but it will ease with time, you have many friends here in the forum even though you have not met us personally. If ever you need to talk please don't hesitate to contact me.

My deepest sympathy to you Alan, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Take care my friend.

John.

Our thoughts are with you on this very sad occasion Alan, i'm sure you will find the strength to carry you through and time will ease your heartache. I myself was diagnosed with cancer five years ago but it's now thankfully in remission. Your advice on smoking is sound but it's hard to get it across to the young ones,(my daughter included) as most of them think they can deal with it when the time comes and of course then it's too late. Take care of yourself mate.

I haven't had the chance to interact with you much Alan, but nevertheless, would like to offer my sincerest condolences. I lost my father to cancer and am able to understand the pain you must be feeling right now. I pray that your family and friends are able to offer you all the strength and support you will undoubtedly need and that your memories of better days stay strong and clear.

Andy
